Is it really better and how much further can other cars see you.

Yes.........a car is visible for nearly 4 times the distance with it's headlights on even during daytime hours.

Driving with your headlights on is a good idea. It increases your vision even in the day time. It doubles the distance between the cars ahead of you. In fact there are some new models that automatically turn head lights on as soon as you crank the car. I believe that having head lights on in the day time decreases the chance of accidents because every bit of light helps other drivers to see you. Also note that turning your head lights on when driving through back roads even in the day time. Any kind of prevention of accidents can help save lives.
