I have been investigating fires since 1985 to date. And I can tell you THERE ARE NO RECORDED FIRES HAVING OCCURRED WITH CELL PHONES BEING USED WHILE FUELING A VEHICLE. A cell phone CANNOT cause ignition of gasoline fumes. Smoking, or any open flame present while fueling a vehicle, now that has the probablity of causing ignition of the gasoline fumes. Same thing with gettting back into your vehicle after starting the gas pump, the static electricity created when getting back into the vehicle, CAN cause ignition of the gasoline fumes. The liquid gasoline DOES NOT IGNITE. The fumes given off by the liquid is what actually ignites. |

There have been cases where people have been talking on cellphones while pumping gas, and an explosion has occurred. However, I don't believe there is any scientific evidence at this time connecting cell phone usage and explosions.
Most of the stations just put up those signs to cover there butts from lawsuits. Plus, you really shouldn't be doing ANYTHING while pumping gas, you should be paying attention to the pump. |

It can. Energy is emitted when your phone receives or transmits information (or a signal). This energy release can produce a spark to ground (metal objects) causing ignition of explosive gasoline vapors. |

It is a myth. Mythbusters tested it on episode 2, and it was busted. |

not only is it true, but the myth that you can be killed by a lightning strike while using your land line is true too. let all go back to tin cans and string |

its possible but unlikely. your phone operates on a battery and when being used there is a slight possibility of a spark being generated. better safe than sorry pay attention to the pump. |

Its a myth, tried it on mythbusters and nothing happened! |

If it did, we would see it in the news on a regular basis.
I think it is more likely to mess up the metering system. Just leave your phone near your speakers for a while and you will hear the kind of interference a phone can produce. |

That's a myth that was "exploded" years ago. |

Any thing that has a battery or an electrical charge can start a fire at a gas pump.Always touch the car before you touch the gas pump handle to get any electric charges out of you.Avoid using gloves at the pump as they conduct electricity also.I am a nurse who has seen many burns caused by gas tank flashes-some don't even go to fire just a burst of fire or a small fire ball caused by electricity. |
