Failed road test..parallel parking and 3 point turn???

I failed my road test yesterday. I prepared by reading the manual for my state (New York) and practicing according to the rules and regulations in the book. When I took my road test and parallel parked, this is what I did.

I put on my signal and pulled up next to the car, I looked over both shoulders, in the mirors and then turned my head and looked out the back window as I reveresed the car into the space. When I was in enough, I put on the break and put the car in drive to straighten out the car. As I was doing this, the examiner yelled, "bam, you would have just been hit in the *** because you were not looking out the back window!" Why would I be looking out the back window while I was pulling forward? Wouldn't I HIT the car infront of me (possibly) if I was looking behind me while pulling forward? Also, while I was backing in, a couple times I took a quick glance infront to make sure I was not near the car infront of me. The examiner told me that was wrong to do, that I should NEVER stop looking behind me. This is what it says about that in the NY driver manual...

"Look behind you over both shoulders to make sure you will not interfere with pedestrians or oncoming traffic. Back up slowly, and begin to turn your steering wheel all the way toward the near curb. Look through the rear window, not the rearview mirrors, as you back up. Check to the side and front occasionally to make sure you are clearing the vehicle ahead."

He told me to "never mind what the book says" when I called him out on it. This was not the only instance he yelled at me or told me I was doing something wrong.

To do the 3 point turn, when he asked me to do it, I put on my right blinker and pulled to the right of the road. Then I checked over my left shoudler and put on my left blinker and crossed over to the left side of the road so I was at an angle facing the left curb. Then I checked again for traffic and put my car in reverse (with my wheel turned as far right as possible) and backed up to the right curb. I stopped, checked again for traffic and then pulled away from the curb. This is what the examiner said to me, "What the hell are you doing?! You don't even need to cross over to the left side of the road!"

This is what the NY manual says about 3 point turns...

Signal with your right directional, then pull over to the right and stop. Signal with your left directional, then check carefully for approaching traffic.

Turn left, cross the road so you come to a stop while facing the left curb or edge of the road.

Check again for traffic. Turn your steering wheel as far to the right as possible, then back up to the right curb or edge of the road.

Stop, check again for other traffic, then pull away from the curb.

That is how I did it, but he said it was totally wrong??? Through out the exam he kept laughing at me, and shaking his head. At one point, when I was doing the 3 point turn he says, "who the hell taught you to drive!" I did very well, but he kept saying it was all wrong, and not to listen to what the manual says. I don't get it. He was very rude to me as well.

Can someone tell me why the way I did the parallel parking and 3 point turns, were wrong?

Thanks to everyone for your comments. You can not choose the examiner however. Where I live, they only do road tests twice a month and say 10 people need to take the test that day, everyone is given the same appt. time and day and the same examiner takes each person one at a time. So, you don't know who you will get until you get there.

Well that sounds like you just happened to get the "old grump who's tired of his job and wants to make everyone he can miserable" instructor which is unfortunate because it sounds like you studied hard and knew what you were doing. You should contact the DMV and let them know what happened-possibly file a complaint on the instructor and inform them of his unprofessional attitude with you. Then re schedule your appointment :)

kelly_f_1999
well it seem to me first you should reported them for cussing and being rude..... i wasnt there so i cant say what or if you was doing it right or not but what you have said here you was doing it the right way.... and you should be talking with the dmv about the person being rude and cussing at you

Try going for the test again with a differnt driver instructor if you think the one you got was alittle loopy. When you go to the office, and they ask why you want a new guy, just tell them the one you hard before told you that the road safety book was wrong, and you would liek a second opinion.

You sound liked you really studied and did everything right. It sounds like you had a real A** for an examiner. Hopefully you get someone else next time! You may want to report him to the DMV.

I'm from Ontario and the rules maybe a bit different but it seems that you should have passed .. no sorry, ACED that driving test! Unfortunately, you just had a really bad instructor. You should file a complaint and retake the test again with a different instructor as soon as you possibly can.

I had a similar instructor when I was first learning to drive. He was extremely rude and it had gotten to the point of him hitting my arms for doing something he deemed inappropriate ... whatever that maybe. As a kid, I didn't know better so I just let it be. Thinking back now, I should have sued his *** off! The school had closed a few years back for whatever reason so I can't do much about it now.

The instructor you had should be at least reprimanded for his unprofessional approach. The manual is there for a reason and it's not so that the DMV or anyone in it can hypocritically dis its own regulations while simultaneously enforcing those same rules in their roads.

if it was me i would have put the car in park told the officer to show me how it was supposed to be done and when he wrecked the car sued him for being a moron and retake the test in a brand new or just fixed car

Sounds like you just got a crappy examiner. As you described it, you did everything perfectly. You can probably file a complaint against this person, maybe they'll hear about it from their manager if other people are having similar experiences.

In the meantime, try it again and ask for a different examiner.

Good luck!

Its was long but at the same time you did everything correct, you just got a very bad instructor.....

Nobody is going to read this; perhaps consider asking the instructor?
