Fear After A Car Accident?

ok, so last night my grandfather (who is actually a good driver) was taking me home. It was raining and as we were turning left, the car coming straight was speeding and hit my side very hard. Both cars are now totaled and the part where the car hit on my side went in 18 inches deep. The driver's window was completely shattered because we spun and hit a pole and my door was completely effed up. Nobody was hurt, just a few scrapes and my back is sore. I found out the only reason I wasn't hurt was because the car that hit us was a sedan and we were in a pickup truck; if we were sitting any lower I could've died. Now I'm terrified of getting back into the car, especially with my grandfather it is almost as if i don't trust him driving anymore. I'm 16 so I get my license soon but now I'm seriously scared and today I'm still shaking and slightly traumatized from the accident. Now when I'm in a car and we turn left I start shaking because I get flashbacks of the accident. I'm happy I had an angel looking out for me, but I still want to get rid of this fear. But how?

Just by the way you wrote your question, it is very apparent that you are one sharp cookie. I had a similar incident where I was rear-ended by a young lady on her way to work for her third day on the job. I was stopped behind a stopped behind a stalled. Got creamed good. Everybody was ok. I was driving for a living at the time so I didn't have too much time to dwell on the episode - until I was off or had some down time. I found myself thinking about what I could've done differently. What options did I have available? Was there anything I should've done to prevent this crash? I used it as a 'lesson learned.' Look for escape routes. With yours, you now know that it is nigh impossible to judge the speed of a vehicle coming almost head-on and that it is better to wait those few extra seconds.

You're fine. Take whatever time you need to put this behind you. Talk with your grandpa. See what his take on the crash is. If he is angry or seething, express your concerns and don't ride with him until feel comfortable.

traumatized from the accident.. just get in car and go.. it happen every day some where all the time... nothing to do about walk or ride.. sorry is like riding a bike and you crash you do it again.. like walking and you fall dwon you get up and walk again so get in car and ride

Even I had an accident in the last month. Try to build up confidence in yourself with regards to your grandfather's driving (because you said that he was a good driver.) Even good drivers sometimes get accidents.

The odds of you getting into another accident are probably slim. It just wasn't your time to die. You just got to have faith that God is with you at all times. After going through this, I'm sure you will be a better driver than most teens your age. Be confident and trust yourself. After awhile you will get over your fear. When you find yourself thinking about the accident just remember you are still here and enjoy life. You have your whole life ahead of you. It's time to leave the accident in the past and move on.

I had something similar happen to me. we were driving in our truck and got t-boned by a truck that blew a stop sign. If we were in a car we would have been hurt or worse. But you just get back into driving in a car or truck knowing that left turns are done millions a time a day and very few result in accidents. As well eventually you will worry less and less about it. Time heals all.
