Fire hydrants aren't just red. What do the other hydrant colors represent?

The particular colors used may vary from location to location (small towns and large cities don't do things the same way).
The reason for the different colors is usually the flow rate. Not all hydrants can supply the same amount of water. By having a color code, the Fire Dept. can quickly determine if they need to lay lines or tap another hydrant. Or even run a tanker shuttle.

Here in Indianapolis, they're green, because the president of thw water company like the color. He must have bought a lot of green paint, because that was several years ago and they're still green!
