First time driving... need advice and stories.?

I married at a young age and had children soon after. ( I was 16) The ONLY bad thing about my young relationship, was I never had the chance to get my liscense. I am now 20 and just got my temps. I am so scared to drive. I do just fine on secluded roads, but when I get on a street with other cars I freak! is this normal? Also, does anyone have any "screw-up" first time driving stories so I don't feel so bad? I was close to a semi and tried to slow down by tapping the brake but instead, Freaked and Tapped the gas, and almost hit the semi!
PS. I do not drive with my children in the car yet. LOL

When I was 16, I was driving my Dad's Oldsmobile. I'd had my license for maybe two weeks. My folks sent me to the store for milk, I was thrilled to be going anywhere by myself. I was coming up to a stoplight to turn left. I thought it was a protected left turn (green arrow) but it wasn't. I barreled on through, and just barely missed a UPS truck that was going straight. And by barely missed, I mean less than a foot. I was too busy tuning in the radio, and I wasn't paying attention to the left turn. That was sixteen years ago, and I still think about it occasionally when I'm approaching a left turn. So my advice is to minimize distractions until you've been driving for a while. Drinking, eating, smoking, combing hair, cell phone, digging out a CD for the stereo, any of these things can cause an accident, especially if you're a newbie. I think it's a great idea not to ride with your kids ar first. That could be a distraction as well. And don't worry, the more you drive, the better you'll get at it. It just takes a little practice : ) |

Just make sure that when you are driving, you are driving. You aren't talking on your cellie, or putting on make-up, or whatever it is that people do when they should be paying attention to the road! That is the single best thing you can do to avoid an accident!!! |

I'm 26 and learning to drive myself these past couple of weeks. Getting nervous amid moving traffic is completely normal, but the driving test will test your ability to handle a vehicle in this kind of situation. Just make sure you can see everything around you and stay focused. |

You'll be a pro in no time, as long has you dont have a nervous personality, those jitters should go away once you become more confident out there. Always be aware, constanly check your mirrors, make sure you always know your outs. Meaning if you come up on something in the road in front of you on a highway, you should already know what lane you can switch to because you have been checking your mirrors, side views and rear views. Split second decisions will happen alot. And try not to get huddled together with a group of other cars on highways, tailgating is the number one cause of accidents. There is no reason to be all up on another cars @ss (bumper) and when they do it to you, dont be intimidated ( and they will do it) just kindly move out of there way. keep space between you and the idiots, keep space between you and everyone so that if the mack up...you will have time andspace to avoid macking up with them.
And practice has much as the gas prices will allow you to.
I was driving way before I ever got my license, and you know what, I didn't get into any accidents until I got a license.
I was driving in snow, and was stopping at a light behind a big old Chevy pick-up, the old ones made of all steel. Sure enough, my car didn't want to stop. I braked, and realized Im not stopping...Under the bed of snow was ice..and what you may find out is that you cant brake on ice, it will make it worse, so the accident was inevitable and all I could do was steer out of it the best I can so I didn't mess up my whole front end, I turned enough to where I clipped my headlight and that was it. And I was lucky the lady i hit was really cool, not to mention the fact that nothing happened to her big ole work horse, but my Acura wasn't so pretty anymore. But we didnt call insurance companies or police or anything.
So, listen just get out there, put the pedal to the floor and just have fun. Driving can be relaxing, and exhillarating..
enjoy!!! |

Yes, it is perfectly normal to be nervous! Just give it your all and do your best! You will see soon after, it is no big deal at all and driving is easy as can be! Best wishes on your progress!!! |
