Friend witnessed an accident, think he will need help ?

Standing outside building this afternoon with friend when i nipped to shop. On returning saw ambulance and police, a car had pulled into a MOT garage and crushed the legs of a person. This was seen and heard by my friend and without being to gruesome both legs were crushed to a few Cm's thick. OH sorry he was under another car thats why driver not seen him. The problem is my mate heard his screams and saw the whole mess and has been quite strange since..
He pretends he's ok but im sure its really affected him even to the point of crossing roads on way home ?? is there anything I could do or say to help ? or people to get him to talk to...
Police have loads of witnesses so at least he wont have to give any account but I know its hurt him too???
Additional Details
Please just sensible answers only.

Your friend witnessed something that many don't have to deal with. Usualy this period of shock and disbelief will pass, if he is not starting to act normal in a week or 2, set him down and talk with him, he may need to speak with a counselor about it.

He needs to talk to someone, even if the police dont need his statement they will at least help him to find someone to talk to.
We watched a car flip when we were on holiday and i know my daughter and my dad (he was nearly in tears) was freaked and the person in that car got up and ran away. Show him our messages if you think it will change his mind.
TALK ABOUT IT YOU SILLY MAN.

i witnessed a horrific accident last year and thought i was ok til a few hours later and then i just burst into tears. he is probably in shock still, talking to him might help but i found a quick chat to my GP helped...everyone will want to know the gory details and its not nice to relive it again and again to other 'rubberneckers'. i also replayed the whole thing to my husband..who just sat and listened with asking any questions and i felt a lot better afterwards but you know i still think about it now and then...it really can affect the psyche for a long time. Try to get him to talk a little. I hope he is ok and well done for being a good mate!

It'd take a very numb bloke not to be affected by that. I'd be inclined to just be around for him if you can, at some point he'll probably want to talk it out and you can be there to listen.

Talking about these things is one of the greatest healers, like granny always said, "Get it off your chest". That's basically often all professional counsellors have to do, just be there for someone to unburden himself and it's done.

It's good he's got a friend like you.

This was pretty current and also current in the mind of your friend. I've never and hopefully never witness anything like this. I would give it a little time and see how your friend is coping with it. Be sure to make yourself available if he needs a friend! Not sure that there is too much you can say, he just needs time.

I thought you said you were single ????

Everyone has ways of dealing with things. I was in an armed robbery and I couldn't talk to anyone or go out. I did go to my GP and he sent me for councilling but I didn't really like that, they wanted me to talk through my childhood which brought back a lot of bad memories and actually made me worse. I would suggest to just be their for him and let him talk to you when he's ready. Just tell him that you will be their if he feels the need to talk no matter what time. You know his personality and how he copes with things so use your judgement and do what you think is best for him. Maybe you could suggest seeing a Dr to see if that might help. Good luck you are a true friend to him obviously.

Witnessing a horrible traumatic event affects different people in different ways. I once saw a bank robbery suspect get gunned down by a deputy sheriff, it didn't bother me, but I am not an overly emotional person. If it really bothered your friend that much, maybe your buddy should make an appointment with a therapist who specializes in grief counseling, if they have such people in the UK. I hope your friend is okay.

I have seen a lot of gruesome things in my life. I have trained my brain to except these images and move on. He is suffering a mild form of PTS (POST TRAUMATIC STRESS)

Right now your friend is in the Numbness stage: "At first you may be numb because your mind will only gradually allow you to feel the experience. So the event may feel unreal, as if it couldn't have happened to you. But as you allow your experiences to become more real in your mind, there is a need to think about the event, to talk about it, and at night to dream about it over and over again."

Here are some Do's and Dont's

DON'T bottle up feelings
DO express your emotions
DON'T avoid talking about what happened
DO take opportunities to review the experience with yourself and others
DON'T let embarrassment stop you giving others as well as yourself the chance to talk
DO take time out to sleep, rest, think, and be with close friends and family
DON'T expect the memories to go away: the feelings will stay with you for a considerable time
DO express your needs clearly and honestly to friends, family, tutors, colleagues etc.
DO try to keep your life as normal as possible after the experience
DO be careful: accidents are more common after experiencing severe stress.

I hope this helps.

just an idea, but maybe being a witness would help him justify what he saw and the police offer counselling too

how terrible

well, i recomend confrontation....

Just ask him to talk about it... To you, as a Friend....

After speaking, leave it for a while....

But after about 1month, if he still is 'Strange' then yes....
