Generally, at what hiway speeds does a car hydroplane?

again, general rule please...........must be some rule of thumb?--thanks

Friendly Stranger..
When hydroplaning occurs, more than one factor often contributes to the loss of control. More than not, hydroplaning occurs during a moderate to heavy rainfall on roadways with 50-mph speeds or higher. But other factors also need to be present either to create a sufficient water depth or to reduce the resistance to lesser water depths.

It can be as low as 30mph! not fast at all and when this occurs, release the gas pedal!

you just have to hit the water the right way at the right time its not something like a burn out that you can just do.

I believe that Hydroplaning depends greatly upon the tires you have. If you were driving a race car with basically bald tires the water under the tires would have no path to get out of the way besides going "under" the tire.. causing hydroplaning at a much lower speed.

Tires designed for wet weather have groves in them that are designed to force the water away out the sides and back under pressure and thus prevent a buildup under the treads and letting the car grip the pavement.

The speed difference between the two types of tires for hydroplaning is Dramatic.. lowest speeds can be around 10mph while the good tires may take as high as 70 or 80 mph on the same vehicle.

You will see formulas on the internet that say that they determine the speed of hydroplaning, the one from NASA (I hear) gives a good approximation. I believe these formulas are for aircraft tires which are grooved but not actually designed to channel water effectively (as that would tend to make the tire wear faster).

Other factors are the weight of the vehicle and the depth of the water. These are all factors that will affect when your car will come completely off of the surface of the road and ride on top of a thin film of water.

Tire pressure is used in these formulas. One of the best is located at the link below, with a better explanation.

I have done it going 30MPH.

You're asking "at what speed am I safe from hydroplaning"? No good answer. Depends how much water is there and what road and tires are like. On bad road and bald tires, 20 mph - I've done it.

Alex
This will show you how not to stop when hydroplaning
