Green side lights on my car.. is it ilegal.?

You are allowed white lights at the front, red lights at the rear and amber lights for indicators or side markers.

Any other colour is illegal.

Apart from indicators, which on UK registered cars must be amber, it is illegal to show anything but a white light to the front and red to the rear, with the exception of reversing lights.

The coloured side light bulbs you can buy always state, albeit in small print, that they are not intended for use on the road.

Unless you are a doctor and you are permanently on call to an emergancy whenever you drive in the dark, you really don't want to be displaying green lights at the front of your car!

If anyone wonders why they can sell these things, it quite clearly states on the boxes that these car modding parts come in that "this product may not be legal for use on the road, and is intended for show purposes only"

Try putting white side lights in your car, that way a) you will be legal, b) people won't think you are an idiot, and c) you might be slightly less likely to cause an accident!

The Tank

The motor vehicle construction and use regulations state that blue is a reserved colour for emergency services only, doctors on call can use a green roof light.

Vehicle driving and parking lights (head and side lights) must be white or amber not any other colour. Tail lights must be red.

There is no option or "get out clause". If you are stopped for any reason then you can expect to get "done" for illegal lighting. This will certainly mean a fine and probably points on your licence.

Take out the blue lights now and put in white ones. They won't impress anybody except the dimwits and will cause you trouble sooner or later.

Yes, I know that some motorcyclists fit blue or red filters to their headlights. These are also illegal and can be dangerous.

As before the front lights must be white or yellow, rear must be red with white for reversing, indicators to the sides must be amber.

You can have lights of other colours in the windscreen (like trucks do) or as wiper washers as long as they do not blink or flash.

Basically the position and driving lights must accord to the regulation colours.

If you can see an under chassis light of silly colours from either end or side it is illegal but I believe that you can have the lights as long as it is the 'glow' that you can see and not the light.

Hi, I am a driving instructor and can tell you that green lights are illegal. The reason being is that they are not recognised and could confused other drivers. For example, red lights, mean brake & headlights, white means reverse and yellow means indications. Your car would not pass any MOT with any other colour.

Anything that causes a potential distraction to other drivers, is illegal.

Blue, green, red, white, doesn't matter what color it is.

If it somehow creates a disturbance to anyone outside of your vehicle, it's illegal, because it creates an unsafe condition.

It depends on where you live and what the laws are, its best to just call your local police department and ask.........

I would think that any side lights of any color would be illegal, but that might be a matter of state or city law. Call your local dept. of motor vehicles to be on the safe side.

It can vary by municipality but most laws state only red and amber are legal. They usually don't say red has to be at the rear and amber in the front though. Stick some red LED's in there, look unique and don't get bothered by the law.
