Handbrake does not stay up engaged?

My 2000 Camry handbrake falls down when lifted up. It occasionally stays up. The release button seems spongy. Any idea what has gone wrong. Please don't answer "take it to mechanic". Thank you

Pull the cover off and check the locking mechanism as well as the push button itself.... |

Your parking brake and/or cable may be out of adjustment or you may have debris interfering with the ratchet and sector gear at the lever. First thing to do is to check the parking brake adjustment. If you don't know how, it's not something you can safely do without a service manual or an experienced friend helping you. I could talk you through it, but if you mess it up you could lose your brakes. Better to come out of pocket on that. If the brake adjustment is ok, check the cable adjustment and sector gear engagement by removing the center console and looking for debris. You can tighten the cable adjustment by loosening the jam nut and cranking down on the adjustment nut. Same as brake adjustment for my opinion on the DIY aspects on this one. Good luck. |

the cable might be loose, or the push button release may be wedged inside. Try taking it apart and clean it up |

The ratchet in the Handbrake is worn, you have been applying the handbrake without depressing the release button at the same time, go to a scrap yard and find out for yourself how it comes to pieces and then install, that will not cost you much and if you muck - up with trying to take out handbrake from a scrap car that will not cost you anything either. |

ok repair it yourself...the ratchet mechanism is broken,,,there a spring in the hand brake tube that holds button.. check the cables first just to b sure but,,,,..or take it bla bla bla |
