30 years ago, a semi hooked it's front bumper into my car's rear fender and sent it airborne. The car was totaled, but luckily, I was okay. There were three witnesses who saw the whole thing and it was totally the semi's fault. I was quite shaken up and to this day, I avoid the semi's 'blind' side when at all possible. I was afraid to drive near a semi for years after that, but am over it now. |

Yes, when I was in high school the car I was in as a back seat passenger was hit head on and fell 150 yards (not typo) into a ravine. The back seat I was sitting in had a latch to let it lay down for cargo room failed and came down and broke my tailbone, cracked my L-4 vertebrae in half, and I lost 70% of my L-5 vertebrea. I had nerve damage in my left leg and internal bleeding in my stomach as well as a bruised ovary. I was sent to a local hospital then transfered to a trama center after they realize how bad my condition really was. I was in the hosiptal for three months and spent 1 1/2 years in physical therapy trying to learn to walk again after my injuries. I am fine now for the most part. People do not even know I went through it unless I tell them. I still have back pain, can not move some of my toes, and "dead spots" in my left leg. |

I have.
I flipped a car over (end-over-end) and was thrown through the windshield.
I don't remember much about it.
Medically speaking, I should not have survived. It's only by the grace of God that I did.

My daughter was, she was driving down a dirt road, almost home with her best friend, when a dirt bike pulled beside them and knocked on the passenger window, she was 16 and had only been driving a few months, it scared her so bad she yanked the wheel Hit a telephone pole and ended up upside down in a ditch with water in it. Her friend was unhurt and crawled out, she was pinned by the steering wheel, she said as she hung there her great grandma who had passed away soke to her and told her she's be alright, and her cousin who had also died (at 15) also spoke to her, I some how just knew something was wrong and went looking for her, even though she wasn't late yet, I found her car before the paramedics arrived. She made it to the hospital and lapsed into a coma, she broke both femurs, her hip, collar bone her arm in 2 places, her jaw in 3 places. The Chrysler New Yorker she was driving, folded like a Pepsi can. The doctor told us to call our minister for last rites, which we did, but I just knew she was going to make it. She was in the coma for a little over 2 weeks. She did survive and after several surgeries to plate and bolt all her broken bones and several weeks in live in physical rehab, and a year of out patient. She is finally Ok. She will never be 100% again but she was wearing her seat belt and because of that she did not drown, She had no head injuries, or cuts. Except where the femurs tore through the backs of her legs. She appreciates life a lot more now, and never takes life for granted. |

its ok to ask about things like this,i was hit head on by a tractor and trailer back in the early 70,s and he kept right on going, the car i had went in under his truck, and didn't wreck him,my sister who was on duty at the hospital that night said i died on the operating table, all i know when i woke up ,all i could remember was the bright lights and the sound of crunching metal,i don't ever want to hear that sound again,i have had a few night mares about it,when i went a few weeks later and seen the car it looked like it had been put in a crusher,it was a 1972 Vega gt,it was only 3 1/2 feet high when i seen it,i still don't see how i survived it,but i did,not something i want to happen again though, good luck. |

Yes.
Rolled my pickup five times and received a traumatic brain injury. I lost about a week and a half of time that I do not remember, and spent over a month re-learning how to walk. I also have had problems with short-term memory ever since.
On the flip side, I know it could have been much worse, so I keep the perspective that I have a second chance, and appreciate all the things that I get from that chance. |

I rolled my car in a snowstorm during finals week. I had muscle spasms and couldn't go longer than 30 minutes without puking and had horrible back pain. I am here today and not paralyzed because I wore my seat-belt. The contents of my car flew under the car and I would have gone with my stuff if I wasn't buckled in.
Wear your seat-belt people!! |

The day I got my licence I totalled my old mans car.
The cab that smacked into me was totalled as well.
It was a split second of pure horror. I will never forget the sound of crunching metal. It was loud. The first few days afterward I felt a bit funny, but then life goes on... |

Four years ago, I totaled my car. I was driving in the rain (doing the speed limit), and I hydroplaned. My car first went to the left then spun around and skidded on the shoulder down into the grass, got the front end in some barbwire, clipped a tree and flipped on it's side and bounced off a telephone pole. I thought for sure I was dead. The only thing I can remember thinking was "This is how I'm going to die." Fortunately me and my friend walked away with just a couple bruises. One of my sisters just happened to be driving by right after the wreck. She ran out of her truck screaming because she recognized the car but didn't see me. She thought for sure I was dead. I laugh now every time I look at the pics of the wreck. It seriously just looks like somebody parked my car sideways between a tree and telephone post. And my mom and grandma had just bought me the car on May 17th, and I totaled it on July 24th. Damn! |

Well, it's not a good time. I was like 17 at the time, we had forgot something at my friends house on the way to a Halloween party so we turned around to go back. I was going like East or something and she was going north. I was in a hurry and speeding and started to approach an intersection where there are no stop signs or anything, the person to the right has the right of way. That person wasn't me and I was going about 45 and the other lady about 25, she started to slow down like she was going to let me go, so.....I continued at 45. She didn't slow down and actually started to speed up. For some reason I thought I could make it.
I DIDN'T!!!!
I was driving my moms mini-van and she smoked the front of the passengers side spinning the van around and making me turn and hit another part of her car. I don't know how to explain it, but both of our cars were friggin totaled. My friend and I didn't have our seat belts on (DUMB!) I got smashed against the windshield and the force pushed me up and crushed my knee inbetween the door and the dashboard and breaking 2 of my ribs. My friend knocked out the passengers side window with her head and cut open that side of her face pretty gnarly. I thought I killed her....worst feeling in the world.
The people in the other car, a woman and her 2 children were alive, but the driver, who also didn't have her seat belt on cracked her head open on the wind shield and her 2 kids also didn't have their seat belts on, but by the grace of God, were completely unharmed.
That was THE STUPIDEST thing I think I've ever done as far as putting others at risk....for nothing. I was in a hurry and acted irresponsibly. I could have killed people, myself included. My knee was messed up, it was almost black for 3 or 4 months and I still have some bad issue with it today and I am now 24.
I WEAR MY SEATBELT ALL THE TIME, EVEN IN THE BACK SEAT SINCE THAT ACCIDENT. I'm a much better driver and definitely more aware. One of the scariest days of my life. |
