The metal studs to which you refer are there register any
movement in the pavement due to various things such as
subsidence and viberation from traffic These stud are checked
periodically for any sign of movement

Hmmmmmm interesting question as yeah i've noticed them. I always thought they were to indicate to partially sighted people that they were coming to the edge of the pavement at a pedestrian crossing etc.
