Tire chains go on the rear of the vehicle. This is so you can achieve better traction at the back rather than the front since most of the force comes from the back wheels. |

If it's on demand all wheel drive, it's best to have chains on all the tires. If you only have a single set, put them on the rear. |

If you are using them just to extricate yourself, put them on the rear, or the front, whichever wheels are likely to grip better. Take them off as soon as the vehicle is free.
Never, never drive with chains on only one set of wheels on an AWD, no matter what the weather conditions. If you put them on the rear, the front will lose traction and the rear will throw you into a spin. If you put them only on the front, the rear will lose traction on a corner and throw you into a spin.
In other words, an AWD vehicle is unsafe with chains on only 2 wheels.
That being said, if you only have one set of chains for a RWD or FWD car, put them on the drive wheels. If you only have one set of chains for the AWD, never drive with them on, period. |
