Have you ever been honked at by another car because of the way you are backing out of a parking space?
Find answers to your legal question.

Have you ever been honked at by another car because of the way you are backing out of a parking space?

When I put the car in reverse, there was nobody behind me. I looked out my driver side window and there was nobody behind me. I then look at my rear view mirror, and there's nobody there. I begin to back up at 4mph, turning my wheels. I'm still looking at my rear view mirror, and not a damn body in sight. A split second later, I hear a honk, I brake and look around to see who honked. And this car that just turned had stopped there, looking at me. So I say to myself, "ok, wow, this guy honked at me, I wonder why." So I'm there stopped, and he doesnt move, and I'm wondering, why he doesnt move, since he has the right of way. I even pull back into the space, though I only backed out 2 feet. He's still there, then 4 seconds later, he backs up and goes right back where he came from.

This is how I've always backed up, even though I dont turn my head to see the rear, I found that I see the exact same things If I use my rear view mirrors and side mirrors. I mean if this is the wrong procedure, I dont know, cause turning my head to see through my back windows? Is that what others do? Cause if I do that, and there are other cars parked beside me, I still wont be able to see if there are other cars out there untill i'm halfway out of the space. And what If I was driving a van that had no back windows, see then that would make this procedure of turning your head back, kinda pointless. All you would have are the side mirrors.

I always back out, one foot, then stop for a second. Then back out another foot, then stop, untill I am half way out of the parking space and can see the road. Sometimes I find a car there that was courteously waiting for me to back out. So in doing that, I've never had an accident.

So I ask you, do you think my method of backing out is wrong? Was the other driver justified in honking at me, even though he was like 10 feet away from me. I am thinking he probably honked at me cause he saw my head through my door window and thought "this idiot must be backing out blindly like an ignorant twit and will never see me."

I drew a diagram of this scenario here: http://s5.tinypic.com/2lcb6oo.jpg
I am the blue car, and the other driver was the red car. Where the cars are positioned in the diagram is where the other driver stopped and honked, and where I stopped to look.

If a person has time to honk they have time to avoid the collision. Ignore them. The last time I honked at someone was about two years ago -- she was pulling out of a driveway and had not seen me on my motorcycle. I was already starting evasive maneuvers when she stopped and yielded me the right of way.

You may, however, change the direction you park. Bell System Practice is to back in the least dangerous direction. In a squared parking spot such as in your drawing the safe direction to back is into the parking space -- no one will be driving behind you. That way, when it is time to go, you pull out forward.

That happened to my Uncle, so he got out of the car and went back to the other car and asked, "Ma'am is there a possibility that you need some help, and you were blowing for my attention?" I would not suggest doing this, but it was funny. Wonder if she still blows at people when they are backing up? That happens alot, don't let it stress ya or make you mad, you haven't done anything wrong.

I would have simply pulled back into the spot and taken my car out of gear. I simply do not assume that the other driver is going to give me a break and I never take my directions from another driver.
Defensive driving dictates that you should always err on the side of caution.

I was travelling on a 4 lane street beside a transport when he slowed down. On the assumptiom that he was making a turn I continued on. What he had actually done was slow and wave another car across his front from a parking lot. Great idea; poorly executed. I hit the car and the end result was was two write offs and the other driver was injured.

the other car was probably honking at you to let you know it was safe to back out...it's very common.

Buslady
so...you failed to look out the right side windows?

you should know how to use your mirrors, dont depend on turning and looking over your shoulder, that's a horrible way to do it.

do a mirror check, left, right, rear view then a look out your left, right windows...back slowly, covering your brake...be cautious.

You need to turn your head. You could miss a small child. I always turn my head. It's a grave mistake to only use your mirrors. The way people drive and act today - it's a requirement. Better safe than sorry!

Some people are weird. I don't think anyone has done that to me. I haven't done it to anyone that I recall. I am very cautious - better safe than sorry. I have seen drivers speed around in parking lots - thinking they are the only one around if they think at all. I'm always expecting that.

Again - don't want to hurt anyone - it's easy enough to do - don't want an accident.
