Have you ever been succesful in going to court and having a speeding ticket reduced?

Tonight I was pulled over clocked at going 48 in a 25 and was slapped with a $200 fine and what will be four points on my licensce. I probably was going that fast but I don't know for sure. I'm not required to go to court and this was my first offense. I live in NJ. Has anybody had luck with going to court and getting the fine reduced and fewer points. If I can get the officer to bring it down to only going 19 over the limit I still get the four points but the fine will be dropped by $95. Do you think it's worth the hassle?

I think it is. Most people I know who went to court got the ticket and the points reduced. My theory is that the judges think that if you're coming to court you care enough about it and prolly don't deserve such a high ticket.
Not only that, when you're in court, it's your word against the police officer, and they won't necessarily show up.

Once I went to court and found out the police officer didn't even file the ticket. so it was non-existent. I didn't have to pay anything and got no points. I asked the court clerk about it and she said that it happens all the time. Policemen file the ticket to the wrong county or forget to file at all, so it's well worth it going to court.

Once that ticket is written, you aren't getting it reduced, especially if you were clocked.

What you CAN do is ask for "Court Supervision." You may have to take a class, and pay extra.... but they will take it off the record, and it won't go against your insurance.

I have never fot a speeding ticket but I know a lot of my friends have....One told me she went in to court and told the Judge that she was not the car that was going so fast..it was the car next to her. Another told me she went into court and told the Judge that she was a single mother and could not afford such a big fine. I think you have to see if your time is worth $95.00 for the AM in court or not. Good Luck!!!

This, unfortunately, probably wont work for anyone else ever again... but it worked (by accident) for me.
I forgot about court. Completely forgot! An hour after I was supposed to show up, I remembered. I was unshowered and in a torn dress when I did make my appearance in court. The judge asked how fast I was going, I said 75 in a 55. He asked... where was i going? To work.
So, you'll speed to work, but be late to court? He mused.
Shyly, I looked at him and said, I didn't want another speeding ticket?
He laughed, the DA agreed to reduce to 69 in a 55.
I was given a $5 fine plus the court fees... total $65.
I swear it's true!!!

I have heard of my friends go to court and reduce the cost. You can afford to do it if you in the same town than travelling to the court.

Absolutely, just take your time, and make sure you have good excuse (Dr's note) to postpone your visit few times.

Agreed...go to court and at very least the fines will be dropped. If the cop doesn't show, you'll get the demerits dropped too.

Almost every time I've made the effort to go to court on a ticket the very least they do is reduce the fine.

The only time I've ever gotten a speeding ticket, I went to traffic school and it didn't go on my insurance and I only had to pay for the class.
