Have you ever run over an animal with your car?

So I was driving on the highway and I ran over 2 squirrels in a half hour! I don't know what is wrong with me; just a few weeks ago I hit a possum. I am a really careful driver but all these critters keep running in front of my car.

Try driving the Alaska Highway - there are these little brown birds that sit on the side of the road, then the whole flock just flies up straight into your path. You'll soon give up being squeamish about them!
Animals simply don't know what to do when a car approaches (rather like cyclists), and they can be very unpredictable. If you can avoid them without putting yourself or others at risk, all well and good, but if you can't you can't.

It comes in threes, so don't worry it won't happen again.

Ran over dog once; rather, he ran under my car while it was under way. Residential street, I saw him out the corner of my eye and slowed planning to stop and he just darted under the car...and kept going out the other side. I heard the impact with some part of the undercarriage, but the little guy didn't lose any speed, so I figured, no harm no foul.

Yes. If you drive, it is inevitable. Okay to feel bad, but be assured the animals will repopulate.

I once ran over a deer that someone else hit and left lying across the lane. It was dark out and I didn't see it until I was almost upon it. At first I thought it was a dog, so I tried to straddle it between the wheels. (Didn't want to slam on the brakes b/c it was icy.) Unfortunately, it was a deer, and when I drove over it, it messed up my transmission linkages. Ouch.

Be glad you didn't hit a deer...or a skunk!

Have run over rabbits and few birds. It doesn't bother me too much.

The worst one I had was when I was driving my Mum's old Peugeot 106 (Google it if you have to) up to Scotland taking the back roads. We were coming over the Pennines along this small road and going downhill along a straight section when I could see a curlew or some other moorland-loving wading bird right in the middle of the road. I slowed down thinking that it would see us coming and fly out of the way, but it just ran down the road straight ahead of us. I kept going at reduced speed in the belief that I'd eventually get sufficiently close to cause it to fly up.

It didn't.

So now I'm looking in the rearview mirror to see if it comes tumbling out the back. 100 yards. 200 yards. 300 yards. Nothing. I'm beginning to get a bit worried now, so I pull over and check the front of the car. Sure enough, the bird has been scooped up by the low-slung radiator intake under the front bumper of the car and there are just a pair of wings and a pair of legs sticking out. I had to get my wife out the passenger seat to pull down on the plastic intake so I could get the bird out.

Glad I did though. We still had many miles left to go that day and with the bird right up against the radiator, it could have caused problems for the car and made removal of the body a much less pleasant prospect.

I used to feel bad about hitting animals. But since I live out in the country and have hit too many to remember I really just get pissed off when they run in front of my car.

I do remember hitting at least 1 dog, 3 cats, a turtle and a black bear. Add to that a couple of raccoons and other smaller critters. Only the bear caused damage to the car fortunately. I generally hit them on my way to or from the office, so I am in a rush to either get to work or get home.

I was always told it is better to hit the animal than swerve and risk your life.

OMG!
I remember once I was driving on this very dark street and all of the sudden I hit a raccoon (I think)
It was horrible I just saw his face when it hit one of my front lights, he looked so scared too.

then another time I was driving on the highway and one of those black birds crashed into my windshield!!! the horror!
all I could do was turn on the wipers to see if it could take it off, but then the birds wing got stuck on one of the wipers. gross!

I ran over a baby bird and hit a young squirrel before. I am emotionally scarred for life. (I didn't kill the squirrel but he was hurt)

Squirrels are varmints. If one ever gets in your engine at night you'll find out how destructive they can be. They can totally destroy a wiring harness in a very short time. They breed like rats. Don't mourn them. Just put it down to natural selection. You're helping to control the population.
