Have you ever seen a runaway truck ramp in use?

Heading west on Interstate 84 through the Blue Mountains in Oregon there are two runaway truck ramps. I've seen other runaway ramps on freeways and highways on the downgrade of other mountain passes, but got to wondering this last time: Has anyone ever seen one in use, i.e., a runaway actually hurtling into one, or parked there after use?

Yes, brakes on modern heavy trucks are much better than they used to be, but they still can fail due to mechanical problems or air system failures.
The runaway truck ramps you see along mountain roadways are long trenches filled with loose sand and gravel that the driver can steer his rig into in case of a brake failure. They work by creating drag on the truck tires, and slowing the truck safely.
Unfortunately, after entering a runaway truck ramp, the truck usually has to be towed out again, and taken to a repair shop to fix the brakes that failed. |

They used to have these on the highway going up to Whistler Mountain in B.C. Don't know if they still do because the highway has been redone since I was there years ago.
I've never seen one used but I have seen the results of a truck missing one. It was a loaded logging truck and it ended up in a ravine about 120' below the roadbed. Not a pretty sight. |

I have not personally seen them in use, but my father used one and my uncle has twice. When I was a kid, we lived in Northern Idaho and my family was in the logging business. Brake systems on trucks are far better than they used to be so that helps alot. |
