Have you ever seen your parents do this while driving?
|
Is it just me, or is there more and more beginner drivers asking questions about how to do stuff that they (if they were awake) should have seen their parents do thousands of times.
Did they never ask their parents what they were doing, and why, (and how)?
Most of us have grown up riding in cars, right?
I just can't understand why some people ask questions like they have never been in a car before.
Is it because kids ride in the back seat now days?
And they can't see from back there?
And they are watching videos, or playing games, and not learning to drive by observation?
Why do they wait until the week before they go to get their license, to ask some of these basic questions?
Wake up, and pay attention!

We grew up in the days when simple things were expected of us.
A license was something EARNED then.
Nowadays, kids think its a given right instead of an earned privilege.
I always harp on responsibility, and the way it's not taught or encouraged.
Back in our day, it was taken seriously because it was a serious thing to pilot a couple tons of steel down the road. |

Used to be all you had to observe was the relationship between clutch use and gear shift (on the column). It is much harder to observe all the button-pushing, to determine cause and effect. I suspect most of the lack of communication between parent and child has a lot to do with parents being on the phone.
Wait, let's back up a step; are you saying parents should teach kids things directly? Don't we send them to school to learn things like home economics, wood shop, auto repair, reading, history, etc? You're saying parents actually have a role in teaching everyday knowledge to their kids?
Why, if we did that we wouldn't need vast government/union bureaucracies and a Cabinet-level Dept of Education. We wouldn't need "driver's ed" classes. Hey, I have a great idea. If we "apprenticed" our kids to small businesspersons to learn trades and skills instead of sending them to summer camp, we could actually pass along knowledge without government involvement. Think of how much money we could save on government if we made private arrangements for education. Would get better results too, without all the "socializing" brainwashing. |

Parents today don't "parent" like they did when I was a kid.
Example:
"Son, if you don't stop that whimpering and crying, I'm gonna give you something to really cry ABOUT"
(I only tested him ONCE)
TODAY, it's "Now Johnny, you KNOW whining and crying bother mommy and daddy, so would you PLEASE stop? if you don't, we MAY have to give you time out. Will you stop? please???"
Incidentally, my father's style of parenting resulted in me being a good citizen, who is considerate of others, and a successful business owner. |

I blame the in-car TV. Too much TV makes a lazy brain. The TV requires no response. In conversation, you have to pay attention, or the other person calls you on it.
When I was a kid, I watched everything the driver did for years before I got my license. |
