I'm just curious to know how many people have actually kept up to date with legislation since the day they passed their test.

I read it last Fall when my boys signed up for their driving lessons. Hasn't`t really changed much in 40 years.
Now, we didn`t read the whole thing; just the parts covered in the driver`s handbook. I seriously doubt that any one individual has read the whole code. It covers a couple of volumes where I live. |

My highway code book is gathering a bit of dust now. But I still remember most of it as I have only driven for 3 years, but if I am unsure of anything I have quick look in my book. Not sure if any rules have changed since my book though. |

Yes many times over. The laws change sometimes annually and are not always reported very well in the media. I have personally experienced a change in laws that resulted in my receiving a citation. This happens all the time with Professional drivers. The rules get more complex every year and we are now required to have the little green book( FMCSA Guide available at most truck stops, usually for around 10 bucks.) with us at all times. Used to it was just hazmat drivers who had to carry at all times.Now its all of us. This was not what got me a 200 dollar fine. The rules for tying down loads changed last year and was not well publicized. Although what i had was adequate for the weight i was carrying, the length and type of trailer I was using required me to have more. I was not aware of this until I received the citation. Ignorance is no defense. It is required that all drivers maintain current knowledge of the laws pertaining to what they are doing. This is not just for commercial drivers. It is for everyone. |

The last time I re-read the highway code was 10 years ago when my son was taking his driving test, so I guess the answer is really no.

Any changes to legislation are in newspapers when they get passed, and the papers also print the date teh changes are to take place. So stay current on the news and your good to go. |
