Help with driving! Im not prgressing and it's frustrating me!?
|
I have a lesson in the morning and feel so nervous! I have had many lessons but not really progressing it's frustrating me now I have a new instructor my other one told me to try and my other one and me did not know why I am not really progressing. I guess doing theory would help too? And how do you increase confidence? My instructor says with how many I have had I should be thinking of booking practical but am far from it:( and struggling lots. Help!

Learning to drive is not easy and it can make you very nervous. I can remember when I first started and it all seemed so daunting. You have so many things to do at once, like on the approach to a junction or roundabout.
You have to check your mirrors as you slow down, indicate which way you want to go, get in the correct lane, select the right gear for a smooth acceleration. Everybody who drives legally will have had to learn all this and I bet you they all thought they would never be able to do it. One day you will approach the junction and it will be second nature.
Driving is about practise, the more you have the more your confidence will grow. Between your lessons, do you have a partner or parent to take you out?
Stop beating yourself up over this. Plenty of practise with a calm instructor will soon have you ripping up your 'L' plates.
All us drivers have all been through it so good luck. |

OK a little confused by some of the above answers, in particular logicalgal's statement that "It takes 50 - 60 hours or more of practice to develop the skills and confidence necessary to operate a motor vehicle." But then directly below: "Everyone is unique when learning"
Let's clear this one up - it CAN take 50-60 hours, but it can also take some people 15-20 hours, and it can take some people over 100 hours.
We really can't help you on here, because none of us know how you learn, or how your instructor teaches! You might have a real dodgy rip off instructor for all I know, but then again, he could be the best instructor and you might (don't get offended by this now!) by a slow learner - not EVERYONE passes 1st time after 30 seconds behind the steering wheel!
Your instructor should be able to deal with your learning plateau, this is VERY common in ALL subjects that are taught to people whether it be maths, driving, piano etc etc etc!
Think about when you first learnt to walk, talk, write, read, do sums, it all takes time and some people are better and faster at one particular area than others. When learning something new, you will always find that at some point, you seem to stop learning for a while, or even seem to go back in time! But don't worry, learning plateaus are perfectly normal, and if you instructor is any good, he/she will work the lessons accordingly so that you don't lose faith in your own ability!

Take it one lesson at a time.
It takes 50 - 60 hours or more of practice to develop the skills and confidence necessary to operate a motor vehicle.
Everyone is unique when learning. Don't compare yourself to others.
Be consistent with your lessons.
Take shorter lessons (1 hour perhaps) to prevent frustration.
Classroom lessons would assist you in learning in a more passive environment.
Ask to observe while another student is driving.
Watching someone else make errors and seeing the errors from the back seat will allow you to make improvements too.
Have patience with yourself. It will take time to learn the skills. Steering is difficult to master.
Remembering where to look, shoulder checking, scanning and keeping your eyes moving load your brain at first, but if you keep at it, you will eventually master it and develop proper and safer skills which you may decide to use the rest of your life to survive each trip you take behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.
It is a big responsibility to drive safely. Stick with it and you will learn and eventually get that licence, which is the first step in your independent life style.
Once you pass your Driver's Test (first, second or third attempt.....just keep trying), then you are thrown out there with everyone else on the roadways of the nation, and then its up to YOU to think safety for yourself and others as well.

First you need to Concentrate on the road!
Study the book, not like Study for 5 hours, but read, about a chapter a day!

I started driving or being in control of the wheel when I could fit on my dads lap. He told me to always look ahead . Meaning if you are merging look around if you are on the highway look as far as you can. The more and more you are observant the better it is. Now in case your not relaxed why don't you try to calm your self with self soothing techniques such as humming, it might be annoying to the instructor but may also be healthy for you. |
