I hit a car on Tuesday and did considerable damage...
I freaked out and left. I regret it so much and these past couple of days have been eating me alive. Please don't make me feel any worse....I rather just die right now for what I did.
I called the non emergency police hotline and asked them if any hit and run incidents were reported. They said ONE was on Thursday (remember I hit the car on Tuesday)..
It was reported at the same intersection as mine, so I am scared this other person filed the report...
The thing is, this incident was on a PRIVATE parking lot, I called and asked and they said they had NO cameras...
and I honestly think no one saw me and got my license plate #
BUT what if they did??
How long before I hear from the police about my incident. It has been 4 days since I hit the car, but only 2 days since a car filed the hit and run police report
Will I go to jail? Isn't this a petty misdemeanor because this was a hit and run on a parked vehicle??? I have a spotless driving record, am 20 years old...have a grade A average and am truly sorry for what I did...
Will my license be suspended? revoked? I'm so sorry...but please, any info is appreciated

No you won't go to jail. But you have committed a crime. The best thing to do is go down to the police station and turn yourself in. They may or may not charge you. They may or may not arrest you. You'll probably merely be charged with leaving the scene of an accident. It's very minor if no one was hurt. They'll do all your paperwork, and then they'll most likely release you. You'll get a court date and probably a fine which you can pay in instalments or work off in community hours.
I would contact a lawyer for some quick advice. Make SURE you read the police report before you sign anything!
The best way to clear your conscience and simply deal with this is just to go do what needs to be done. It's really not that big of a deal. You'll lose a little money, that's probably it. Call a lawyer first. If you can't afford one, just go down to the police station and tell them what happened. They can get you some legal aide.
It's mostly paperwork I'd think, but you really have to take responsibility. It doesn't make you a bad person or a criminal. You just panicked. Might as well fix this, right? |
