How CNG in automobiles has reduced pollution?

MUMBAI: The city has breathed a lot easier since the last time a section of its traffic changed over to a greener, cleaner fuel.

All 55,000 of Mumbaiâ€™s taxis have switched over to CNG since 2000. That has meant they emit 55 tonnes less of carbon monoxide every year.

Besides, the significant drop in carbon monoxide levels, particulate matter in taxi emissions has come down by 99 per cent from pre-CNG levels (a decrease of 29 tonnes).

"We can say air quality has improved in proportion to the improvement in fuel quality as most vehicles are compliant with Euro-II and Euro-III standards," Rakesh Kumar of the National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Mumbai, said. The improvement would be similar in auto-rickshaw emissions as well, he said. An overwhelming of Mumbaiâ€™s auto-rickshaws now run on CNG.

Comparison of sulphur dioxide levels reinforce the theory. There used to be 46 micrograms per cubic metre of sulphur dioxide in Kalbadevi in 1990. The figure came down to 13 in 2000 when the switch from to CNG happened. The 2005 figure was 9.

But BEST buses have been comparatively slower in the switch-over; less than 20 per cent of the fleet runs on CNG. The improvement in air quality could also be short-term. Kumar said an uncontrolled growth of vehicular population could deteriorate air quality again: "Average speeds may come down to 8 kph from the present 20 kmph-25 kmph in the city, meaning more burning of fuel and more emissions."

In short, CNG burns cleaner. It burns more efficiantly, so, produces less pollutants from the tail pipe.

If you have ever been stuck behind an old diesel bus, in downtown traffic, you KNOW how much stinking black smoke can be blown in your face. A CNG bus runs noticeably cleaner.

Another environmental advantage of a CNG vehicle is in how the CNG is already a gas when it enters the cylindars. Gasoline, and in a more limited way, diesel, actually carries dirty particals past the compression rings and deposits them in the engine oil in the crankcase. CNG doesn't "run" like liquid fuels. It enters the cylindars, gets ignited and leaves very little behind. Meanwhile, in gasoline powered vehicles, the oil gets dirtier, less lubricating, adding more wear and tear to the engine. CNG engines need FEWER oil changes, meaning less wasted oil being dumped, AND, the engines last longer because the cleaner oil means better lubrication. And THAT means fewer parts changes.

The longer a product lasts, the less energy it takes to replace it and fewer rescources to make it.

By containing the CNG i.e natural gas, within the car when you have eaten some thing a bit ORF, it helps to reduce polushun!

CNG is also called ad COMPRESS NATURAL GAS.There are many advantages of CNG 1)it can be used as a power generator ,etc...
As per me i think CNG is used in automobiles to reduce pollution because:
1)it produces the harmful products in very small amounts,
2)it is a cleaner fule,etc
