you shouldn't be able to see the side of your own car in the mirrors.
when your at a traffic light. look in your rear view mirror and then adjust your side mirrors to see the cars that are behind those cars, one car back.
you can also have a friend stand behind your car and adjust the mirrors until you can see them |

The left mirror I push it down and keep it towards the left lane. The rear view mirror I set it so I can see as far behind me as possible so I won't have to check the side mirrors to see if someone is behind me. The right mirror I set it the same as the left except its focused in the right line next to me. |

i put the corner of the car on the corner of the mirror that way i see whatever is close to the car and, then the middle for the middle. works for me that or buy some of those blindspot mirrors. |

If you car has substantial blind spots that you can't deal with, you can buy a small peel 'n stick convex mirror that you can stick on a corner your side mirror(s). They make it much easier to see a bigger area, including the blind spot.
They are small enough that they don't distract from normal use of the mirror.

Great question.
I adjust the side view mirrors in reference to the rear view mirror. I want the rear view to give as much view straight back. I adjust the left and right sides to slightly overlap what I can see in the rear view and tilt them down slightly. When changing lanes or backing up, I always lean over to get the max view from the mirrors. Also, for backing, if I am not sure, I'll stop, get out and check.
