How can I make sure my car is safe enough to drive long distance?

I am planning to drive a few hundred miles and I am not sure if my car is good enough to handle that. I recently done and smog test and it passed, does that mean it's safe enough? What can I do to make sure?

Have a trustworthy mechanic give it a tuneup and check the tires.

Smog test only means that it burns clean. There's no way for that test to know if something else will fail tomorrow (like the belt, tires, etc.)

Only you can know on an old car (old, meaning not brand new). Only you know the history of your car. Did it ever leave you stranded? Failed to start? Stalled?

Also on a long trip there are few things you should do

(1) join the AAA
(2) check the tire pressure
(3) check the tire pressure ON THE SPARE
(4) check that you have a jack
(5) carry gallons of water (or coolant)
(6) carry motor oil (4 qt)
(7) check your belts condition
(8) carry flashlights
(9) carry flares - if possible
(10) if you are good with fixing - carry basic tools
(11) change oil
(12) change coolant (or at least top up)

Do NOT change oil OR anti-freeze less than 1 week from the trip. Some people do that like 1 day before, and then find out they were done wrong 200 miles away from home - broken down. If you did that few week in advance, you would find out but not 200 miles from home.

You get the idea.

Good Luck...

P.S. Don't pick up hitch hikers - even a "friend" you met the day before.

Check all the fluids under the hood and get an oil change. Take it to the dealer and they might (a big might) check under your hood for free and top up your fluids. Check tires and their pressures and the spare.
