How can I tell if a stop sign is legal?

I was issued a ticket my college security for rolling through a stop sign and I just want to make sure that it is a legal stop sign before I pay it. The sign itself is not like the ones found on street corners, its a little smaller.

If it was on college property, then all it needs to be legal is to have been placed by the college. If it is the right colour and shape it is a legal stop sign, and you get to pay your ticket. Believe it or not, if you don't pay it you can be prevented from graduating! |

After reading other comments, my opinion changed. If it was in a college campus, then it will obviously look different because the government didn;t issue the sign and put it up, the college did. And, since it said stop, probably at an intersection, you should have stopped. |

Take down the sign, take it to the nearest DMV, and ask them if it's legit. |

I dont know about colleges, but you know the ones in parking lots and stuff, well those are not real stop signs, and cant be enforced by police. They are just suggestions to stop, and OK to go through. |
