How can a car, with an automatic, roll back two feet while in Park?

Car is a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. There are no other issues with the transmission.

The only thing holding an automatic car back on a hill in the Park position is a pawl, which is a hinged catch that fits into a notch of a gear in the transmission to prevent it from moving forward or backward. If this gets broken, then the car may as well be in Drive. Because the transmission is only loosely connected to the engine itself, the weight of the car will be enough to move it downhill. In a standard transmission, the transmission is much more strongly connected to the engine via the clutch, so even in top gear the friction and compression in the engine is enough to keep the car from moving. |
