Signs that show what speed limit you should be going do not necessarily help the environment but the purpose of the signs is to inform drivers of the law in that particular area. But if you want to talk environment, it is true that the more gas you use the more damage you do to the environment itself. What is true, is that when you drive at higher speed rates you actually release more toxins into the air. You consume more gas when you have elevated speed levels. So lets say for instance, if there is a speed limit of 45 mph in a particular area. If you as a driver like to speed, and you drive at 65 or 70 mph then you are doing damage to the environment because you are consuming more gas. So in that sense it can be damaging the more you speed because you increase the toxins in the air. That is why many auto makers have turned to hybrid cars and increased the mileage per gallon. |

mileage is a factor of aerodynamics, car size, weight, engine size, weight, temperature, grade, wieght of driver, driver's skills and habits, etc, etc, etc. it depends on all those things.
generally speaking, they should result in people driving at a fairly efficient speed, using less gas. this lowers the demand for oil, preserving resources, and also theoretically lowers pollution. |
