How can you tell when you are driving over black ice?

Tyre noise goes very quiet, steering suddenly becomes very light. If you're lucky & have your wits about you, gentle deceleration is the only option - braking and/or steering will do you no good at all!
One of the reasons the Highway Code suggests leaving yourself at least 10 times the normal stopping distance if the weather's suspect. |

You don't, until you turn the wheel or try to stop, with bad or no results. |

When you ease into your breaks and you realize your not stopping. Next comes the, "O sh--". |

everything will get really quiet, when you drive over it,you wont hear the tire noise you normally hear either, the best thing to do in a case like this is just keep the car strait, and don't give it any more gas,let off of it slightly ,and then you,ll hear when you do get back on good dry road, its a scary feeling though to get on that stuff, good luck. |

If you suspect there's black ice on the road, just slow gently, and take it easy with the accelerator and breaks. Don't know where you are, but it's far to warm for ice in most of the U.K. at the moment, except perhaps in your drink. |

I am from NJ and that is hard to predict.
There is a glaze. But you do not always see it.
So you can quickly lose control.
Was luck when there had a job that made me go to work at 4 a.m. so never had a mishap. But it can bring your heart into your throat real fast. you cannot control the car when it is swering all over the place. |

that's pretty easy if the car starts to slide and you cannot see anything on the road that's a good indication so long it is very cold .if in doubt get out then try to stand up |
