Very good question...The maximum speed limit in the US is 75 mph - and that's in only 10 states...One could make the case that auto manufacturers are complicit in every speeding ticket issued for over 75 mph...Compounding the issue is the fact that most 6 cylinder automotive engines have more power than the engines of your basic Beech, Piper and Cessna general aviation aircraft...The ego is lethal. |

Speed limits are for public roads. Private roads and races tracks to exist. |

Because nobody is going to buy a performance vehiclewith a speedo that only goes up to 80. |

Honestly I think its nice to know your car can go that fast even if you never take it to that fast. Why do you think the corvette speedometer says 200 mph if its not legal to drive that fast, its more of a sporty feature. Other than that I don't know write the engineer who designed the gauge cluster and ask them why it goes up to that high. |

You have to be able to tell when you are breaking the law. Otherwise ignorance becomes an excuse. Really though, The Speedometer is a gage that measures how fast the vehicle is moving, not how fast it should be going or, is allowed to go by law. If the latter were true it would be called the morality meter for cryin' out loud. |

The drivers of cars which those types of speedometers can fantasize that, nif they ever NEEDED to go that fast, they could. Regardless of the driver's ability to control the vehicle's speed. |

because sometimes when you are in the military you get lucky enough to be statined in germany where you can take advantage of the autoban...................by the way, just cause the speedo says 150, dont mean the car will actually do 150.....trust me. |

It could say 'warp 3' on the speedometer... Doesn't mean the car will actually go that fast! And even if it did, it's still the responsibility of the driver to maintain legal speeds when driving on public roadways, so it doesn't matter how high the speedometer goes. |

Because it's not illegal EVERYWHERE to drive fast. |

It's just a visual representation of how powerful your engine is. |

Legal or illegal has nothing to do with a car's performance. Hopefully the speedometer will respond to the car's maximum speed. I've driven many vehicles, mainly trucks, that go beyond the the speedo. That's not nice, I mean how do you know how fast you are going? Every American car built after say 1985 has a safety cut out that will shut it down at a safety determined speed like 90, 101, 116, etc. try it. |

most cars can't go that fast, and just because it is there doesn't mean you have to drive that speed. |

Because, speeding is fun. Also, some cars can go faster than there dashboards say, also. On the freeway I got my car up to five miles an hour....after it wrapped around once. |
