How come they don't have seatbelts on buses or trains?

Some do, some don't. (In both cases.)
Also in both cases, the compartmentalization design helps some to protect the occupants. The force from collisions is distributed along the entire vehicle and isn't as typically as severe as in a smaller vehicle like a car. (Not to say a train derailment wouldn't be severe, but like another answer pointed out, seat belts probably wouldn't make much of a difference anyway and could even slow rescue and evacuation procedures.)
The issue of seatbelts on school buses has long been debated and most studies have revealed they wouldn't be much help and in many instances could acutally make matters worse and/or introduce new sorces of injuries. |

Well, I don't think it would really matter if you were strapped in on a train or not. You should get on YouTube and watch some train derailments. Seatbelts would only prolong your destiny for the dirt (by seconds). As far as buses go, I'm sure its a safety issue for evacuating if it tips or flips over or catches fire, not to sure about that one. You should ask the transportation department, with all the lawsuits nowadays, there's a good reason for it. |

I drive for HARTline, the city buses in Tampa, and I am not privy to those reasons, but am reasonably sure it has to do with cost compared to benefit. To outfit hundreds of buses would cost a lot of money that counties and city governments just don't have. We are going through cut backs in this area already. (How many people want to pay higher taxes for this?) And compare that to the extremely few people who are hurt on buses, it's just not feasable. |

Simple. No federal requirement. Do you think manufacturers will install them simply to be good guys? NOPE.
They cost money! |

Some buses and coaches do have them. The problem is most passengers don't use them anyway |

There's not the same safety issue with buses and trains. Statistically, you're extremely safe in either. When a bus or train crashes, it makes headlines. When was the last time you saw a car crash make the news? |

The coach we went on holiday to Italy on did have seatbelts. It is law to wear them on the mainland in Europe. Should be law here in England too I say! |
