How do I drive my car backwards down an icy hill driveway?

How do I drive my car backwards down an icy hill driveway?

My driveway is a hill that ascends (goes up) as I drive up to my house. During and after snowstorms it turns into a sheet of ice. We have someone that plows but he does an awful job.

I have a 1999 Toyota Camry that didn't make it up the hill last night. I got about halfway up and it started sliding down. I had to get my neighbor to help me pull it onto the grass and even she slid down before getting it on. It is now halfway up the hill and backwards. I have to leave for church this morning and descend down the hill backwards in order to do so. As I go backwards down the ice I have to be careful not to skid left because there is a rock wall I will go over. Once I get my car down the driveway, it leads to another descending hill which also gets very icy.

How the heck do I get my car out of this mess?

Ask someone to pick you up for church.Maybe the ice will melt some by the time you get back.

It's hard to give advice without seeing the hill but I'd recommend NOT driving it down. If you really have to just keep it in reverse and don't apply any throttle, this will allow the engine to do the breaking for you. Use the breaks as little as you can as even applying them a tiny bit could cause the wheels to lock.

if you find this to be a reoccurring problem every year when it snows or gets icy i would recommend looking into buying a 4 wheel drive either for every day use or to drive around in the winter when the weather gets bad. although 4 wheel drive is great to have and helps out a great deal it doesnt mean you will stop any easier just cause you have 4 wheel drive. good luck hope this helps a little

In reply to your Question..!
I dont think anyone could tell you how to do that, im afraid it would just take skill and luck.
Anyway, would it not just be easier to just reverse up it when you are parking it up for the night. That way you only have to roll it out, and you would be able to see better when guiding it.
And to solve your problem with the driveway turning into a sheet of ice when its cold..!
You could either, have a costant supply of sand handy to melt it, or, you could just change your driveway surface by covering it with stones or bark, for examole.
