I have an automatic. If I didn't want to burn out my brakes while constantly going downhill, what would be the best way to use my engine for breaking?
My gearbox looks like this:

Shift to a lower gear when you are going downhill. You will be puting wear and tear on you transmission, instead of your breaks. So take it easy doing it. |

gear the transmission down a gear or two depending on grade of hill you will be traveling at a slower rate of speed and will have to use the brakes less |

In most owners manuals they recommend down shifting on long down hill stretches as it uses compression braking from the engine and does NOT hurt the transmission, and saves you're brakes from overheating and fading and wear. |

Go to 3 or 2, whichever works without over revving the engine.
Wont hurt it at all. I have a '02 pickup with 90K miles and I ALWAYS gear down when slowing for a signal or exiting the freeway. ALWAYS. |

At the top of the hill, select a lower gear. If you find the engine racing and the car going too fast, apply the brake, where safe, and slow down enough to gear down even lower.
There may be a point where you will have to compromise beteen over revving your engine, and using your brakes to maitain a safe speed.
You can't expect to NEVER use the brakes on a downhill drive, but the low geared engine will mean you have to use it less. |

IF THIS IS JUST A NORMAL VEHICLE AND NO SOME 18 WHEELER, JUST LEAVE IT IN D4 WHILE DRIVING.
THE VEHICLE IS DESIGNED TO OPERATE IN D4 UNLESS YOU DRIVING DOWN SOME VERY STEEP HILLS THEN YOU WOULD CHANGE GEARS.
READ THE OWNERS MANUAL AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. |
