How do people die in car accidents?

What are the typical MEDICAL causes of death in a car accident? Assume the person stays inside the vehicle (wearing seatbelt + airbag opens), and there is no fire. Many times you hear "cardiac arrest", but why did the cardiac arrest happen? Please don't give any 1 in 10000 type scenarios -- I'm asking for the most common causes.

Thanks.

Ask Dr. Dingo
In most of the cases, the chest cage (ribs) breaks upon impact (as it hits the steering wheel). The broken ribs puncture the lungs and the person find it difficult to breath. This leads the heart unable to pump as there is no oxygen supply. Further, the punctured lungs are not able to push out the blood as it becomes impossible for it to expand properly, due to the injury. This leads to create pressure on the heart, which eventually fails.

Secondly, if the lungs are working , and there is any head injury, blood clot starts forming in the brain leading the person to Coma. In that case also the person dies as the clots create pressure inside the skull.

Thirdly, if there is a damage to the spinal cord due to the impact, the lower limbs stop responding. And the person is not able to move if trapped in an abnormal posture. This leads to organ failures as the brain is not able to control the paralytic limbs, hence faces improper breathing leading to a cardiac arrest.

People are squishy, and not made to withstand 60+mph impacts for any reason. Restraining devices only keep a person from bouncing around inside the car, but a hard enough impact will still rupture organs, dislocate joints and break bones.

The most common cause of death? Not understanding your vehicle's capabilities and limitations, and believing you can drive effectively while on the phone.

Head and internal injuries are very common.

If that is the case most people would survive, but then there are the rest of the statistics and who knows what the causes are. It could brain injuries, internal injuries, heart attack, stroke, or other possibilities.

I think most of the time it's just the force of the impact. They might slam their head against the window or steering wheel, the neck might get snapped back and broken, stuff like that. Cardiac arrest would happen if the body went into shock from numerous injuries, and the heart stopped.

Always is lack of breath.

hey
A cardiac arrest, or circulatory arrest, is the abrupt cessation of normal circulation of the blood due to failure of the heart to contract effectively during systole.[1]

"Arrested" blood circulation prevents delivery of oxygen to all parts of the body. Cerebral hypoxia, or lack of oxygen supply to the brain, causes victims to lose consciousness and to stop normal breathing. Brain injury is likely if cardiac arrest is untreated for more than 5 minutes,[2] although new treatments such as induced hypothermia have begun to extend this time.[3][4] To improve survival and neurological recovery immediate response is paramount.[5]

Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that, in certain groups of patients, is potentially reversible if treated early enough (See Reversible Causes, below). When unexpected cardiac arrest leads to death this is called sudden cardiac death (SCD).[1] The primary first-aid treatment for cardiac arrest is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (commonly known as CPR) to provide circulatory support until availability of definitive medical treatment, which will vary dependant on the rhythm the heart is exhibiting, but often requires defibri

Cardiac arrest happens when the chest cavity is crushed aginst the inside of the car. If its a driver & the car has no airbag like some of the behemoths of the 70/80's that may be a common death due to the stering wheel being pushed into the persons ribs/chest.
I pulled a guy out of a 40MPH wreck & he had died instantly because he reached over from the passenger seat to change the radio station on the steering wheel. I believe he grabbed the wheel causing the car to wreck & it gashed open his arm from elbow to wrist & his body also hit the center console. Not alot of external trauma & he was wearing a seatbelt but sustained internal injuries & died. Hopefully that sheds light on someone being killed in such a simple crash.

Same way that everyone else dies.

Lack of oxygen to the brain.

BOOM! when they're still inside
