How do we solve the problem of tailgating?

People who drive too close do it to intimidate the person in front into either moving over or speeding up; the think their journey is much more important than anyone else's and they have to be first. When someone tailgates me I just move over as soon as I can and let them go. Yes it's annoying and they are idiots but I'm not going to put myself at risk by slamming on my brakes just to prove a point. If they want to get past me so badly I just let them do it. The best laugh I ever had was on the A1 once, some idiot in a BMW was driving right up everyone's backside and flashing his lights to get them to move over, once he got past he was putting his foot down until he came up behind the next car, forcing them over and then speeding off at 100 miles per hour until he was out of sight. A few minutes later I came round the bend and he'd been pulled over by the police and everyone who he'd overtaken was driving by having a good laugh at the fool!

whenever someone does it to me, I slow right right down, to an unbearably slow speed. (I'm talking TEN MPH!!!!) It annoys the sh it out of these morons!! And I love doing that! And pretty quickly they overtake you and they're on their chav vy little way.

But the main reason I do it is because if they do happen to smash into the back of my car, the slower i'm going means the less impact it could have on my spine etc. You're never going to stop these morons.

I would also love to have one of those electronic message boards running along the bottom of my rear windscreen which everytime some chav tailgates me would display the message:
"Back off you chimp or I will shoot you."

But apparently that's incitement or something. How dull.

Seriously though, next time someone does it to you, try the slowing-right-down thing and watch how much it annoys them!!!

my opinion is that we put a sensor on all the stop lights and sign posts on the high ways that detect the intervals of the cars just like they have cameras that take pictures of you running stop lights and mail you the ticket, I mean they use in NASCAR racing to tell the intervals betewwn cars on the track so why not?

Annoying interior proximity alarms which are part of the ECU with sensors fitted to the front of vehicles. It is no good trying to retrain such morons.

Im afraid you cannot make people not tailgate, its ridiculous thing to do especially when on the motorway or dual carriage way when doing high speeds.

The only thing to stop is to tell people to just overtake if there in such a hurry.

The government should make some television adverts showing the dangerous and thats the best we could do.

All I do is turn on my four ways for a second. Most tailgaters back of when I do that and sometimes I get a little shrug from them. Not everybody tailgates deliberately; most tend to creep up slowly when they forget themselves.

If the tailgating is deliberate I just try ti facilitate their getting around my car. I have no inclination or desire to '''play games''' with arrsseholes on the highway.

Back (in a younger - more foolish day) when I used to 'entertain' tailgaters and roadragers I had a 1986 Volvo 245 Wagon with high mounted fog lamps on the rear. If anyone got too close I'd flip these lamps on and the inside of their car would be bathed in a bright red glow. Stopped doing that when I almost caused a three car wreck. I flipped these lights onto an inexperienced driver and he locked up all four wheels and nealy hit two other cars. NOT KOOL ! !

Slow down to the speed of a vehicle you are passing, then put your hazzard warning lights on, rear fog light and keep touching the break pedal to make your break lights flash as well....... then wait for them to back off, if they don't get it, its tough on them!!

I've got a sign on the back saying "Brown noser;'s Keep your distance"

I daytime you could try flicking your lights on and off people mistake this for braking and keep back.

Tailgating can also be caused by the vehicle that is doing the passing when they pull back into your lane right in front of you. Often they let off the gas and don't keep accelerating to a safe distance between them and the vehicle they just passed, causing that person to be tailgating (through no fault of their own).
This maneuver is especially dangerous when the resulting "tailgating" vehicle is a big rig truck.

If anyone tailgates you just slam the brake only if their vehicle is smaller and weaker than yours.
