How do you feel about driving across a bridge?

How do you feel about driving across a bridge?

I have always had an anxiety of crossing bridges, especially ones that cross over water. Luckily, I don't have to on a daily basis.

Now that this tragedy has struck Minneapolis, do you feel any different about driving across a bridge?

I heard that what we are paying for Iraq, three weeks of this money would fix every road that needs work in the united states.
What a comparison, huh!

I drove 3 hours today on busy highways, with many bridges I crossed and many more I went under...I thought about disaster a lot today. So many of our bridges were built during that era, nearly 40 years ago, and what are the chances of another collapsing? I'd say pretty good, unfortunately.

I have to drive over the George Washington Bridge on the weekends and every time I am driving on it, I always think to myself what would I do if it collapsed right in front of me? I have a huge fear of heights and the way ppl drive on that bridge is insane! Let's just say that now all the things I envisioned in my mind came to reality on TV! Now I got even a clearer mental picture and that not good!

I think now you will see every major bridge getting inspected and the scary thing is that the bridge in Minnesota was being worked on no less. Eeeeek!

well, let's just say that the next time i need to cross a body of water, i'm rowing a boat across.

Thanks to people asking interesting questions here, and me researching the answers, I have now learned about www.highways.org which has links to the federal "inventory" of safety inspections of US bridges, showing which got unsafe "deficiency" ratings, so after we digest which ones in our neck of the woods are almost as bad, or worse than the one that went down, we can be safer than we were before.

Did you see where an Overpass in California collapsed?

Apparenly there was a tanker truck on fire, and the burning contents melted the steel under the concrete causing the overpass to collapse. This kind of puts a new light on the conspiracy theorists who say that the burning aviation fuel of 9/11 could not possibly have caused the building to collapse, and therefore there had to be explosives planted by someone they did not like.

same today as last week, I don't think or worry about it.

I'm less worried than most in a seismic area. Bridge failure is no worse. I was otr when the Oklahoma I-40 bridge went down after a barge hit it. That was a little spooky.

no, a rational person would not be afraid of crossing a bridge, even after what happened in Minnesota.

I hate it! I hated driving across bridges, overpasses, etc before, and now even more.

(I don't drive yet, but I think I can still answer this.)

I've had a fear of going over bridges (particular over water) since I was born. Probably my worst experience with them was when my youth group went to a Youth Conference that was in Missouri in late July. We had to drive through St. Louis, which meant driving over the Missisipi River. The bridge felt like it was 100 miles long, and I was about to have a panic attack. I was shaking.

After I heard what happened in Minneapolis it didn't help at all. I hope they figure out what caused it so it doesn't happen again (or at least not anytime soon).

But luckily there aren't that many bridges that go over water around where I live. But I still get freaked out whenever my family drives over to Illonois and we have to go over the river.

No different than I felt before the bridge in Minneapolis collapsed.

Keep in mind that the engineers that maintain and inspect these bridges use them as well.

How many bridge collapses have you heard of in past years?
Very few.

After any kind of tragedy like this, the media makes it seem like it will suddenly start happening everywhere. What are the chances of more bridges falling in huge incidents such as this? Remember that at the moment, nobody really even knows what caused this bridge to collapse.

Penelope,
I have heard of the overpass and bridge collapse
but I don't let this control my life, but I was afraid of them
years ago.I don't drive across them I would walk across them or the bike. You are fortunate you don't have to use the bridge everyday. Neither do I. when I do I have to try to conquer fear again.
I remember a particular one this was in Laval, Quebec last September. I said Toronto it was Quebec.

It's never really bothered me to drive over a bridge. When I was younger, there was a local bridge that was (and still is) really huge and it's go up pretty high and then come to a point, and go down. It's actually the same type of bridge that was/is in Minneapolis.

Other than that, it's a daily occurrence for me to drive/go over a bridge. I have to do so to get home, so I dont really have a choice. lol
