Depends on rather or not you want to be seen. If it's someone you know, stay 1 or 2 car lengths be hind them. If you don't want to be seen, I would say 10 to 15 cars.

Rather than measuring car lengths (exactly how much IS a car length?) National Safety Council recommends following the three second rule. At whatever speed you are traveling, you should allow at least three seconds behind the car in front.

It is difficult to determine, say, the difference between five car lengths and seven, but, EVERYONE can count to three. Watch as the car in front of you passes an easy landmark, such as a road sign, a tree, a crack in the pavement. Then start counting, "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three," and so on. Or you can do "one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three, Mississippi." The idea is that it takes about one second to say the parts. If you pass that landmark before you get to three seconds, you may be too close, so, slow down. If you pass the landmark at three seconds or longer, then you have a safe following distance.

The beauty of this method is that it self corrects for speed. The faster your speed, the longer the three second following distance is. The slower, the shorter the distance. So, at, say, ten miles per hour dense traffic, it MAY be that you only travel about one car length in that three seconds. At fifty miles per hour, it may take about three seconds to travel five car lengths, and so on. But you don't have to measure or guess at any distances. You only have to count to three.

What i do and has worked for the past 36 years is allow one car length for every 10 miles per hour.

Drive 50 miles per hour stay 5 cars lengths behind and so no.
