I think it's stupid to walk tracks. I don't care how fast or slow a train is moving, you still will FEEL the train coming. Trains are not quiet vehicles, how can you not HEAR something bearing down on you. I know to err is human, but I believe that the hopelessly stupid people in our society deserve no sympathy when they fall to their own recklessness. I feel sorry for the loved ones that are left behind, but not a lick of sympathy for the victim. |

If the train is behind you and you've got your iPod on waaay too loud and don't notice tons of iron behind you - squish
or someone may think it's going slow and misjudge the speed and try to run in front of it
or you trip and fall on the tracks
or you intentionally get hit |

No matter if you're walking against, or in the train's direction, w/w/o headphones, believe it or not, you won't even hear it coming despite it's size and speed.
I commuted from a train station that was on a curve. I never heard it-my hearing's perfect and I wasn't wearing headphones either. The only sound I heard as it was coming around the bend was the whistle-engineer has to blow it when entering a station and before approaching grade crossings.
Another time while waiting for a train at another station with straight tracks. I could see the train at a distance-but never heard it.

A person can be hit by a someone riding on a bike. Think about this. If you are walking in the middle of the street and a person is riding a bike they can hit you because of the force of impact and the fact that one object is reacted upon by another. Bikes generally travel 5-10 mph which is less than trains travel. But my point is that the impact from another object causes a collision. Its simple physics. Now as it relates to the train it is very similar to my bike example. A train has a great amount of weight. With the weight coupled with the speed of the train that causes the impact to be of greater force. So to answer your question a person can be hit by a train even if the train is traveling at 20mph. That may seem like a low speed but at the same time the weight of the impact causes the collision to be greater. |
