They did this on mythbusters, and said to be calm, and hold your breath at the last second when water fills in, and then try to open the doors then. Being calm is the key. good luck. |

If it's that big of a fear for you, carry around a hammer in your vehicle...there is actually one made specifically to break auto glass...you're not the only one with this fear. |

By the time you receive this answer, you will have run out of air and drowned.
When trapped in a car underwater, it is better to call emergency services. |

Stay calm, as the car is sinking you will have about 5 to 10 minutes until it sinks, there will be a small pocket of air usually in the rear corner of the car the door locks will unlock by pulling the handle if you do it before the car is completely submerged you will be able to open the door. when you do the car will quickly fill with water until the pressure is equalized wait until it does then quickly get out before it sinks. a car will almost float when first in the water. |

The hammer is a good idea; but most of the time when a car enters the water the power windows and doors usually will still work for a while under water. Even the headlights in older cars will stay on, but most of the newer cars with halogen bulbs will blow when they hit the cold water. |

It is a small plastic T-shaped instrument with a metal hammer on each side of the T. It also has a seatbelt cutter. My husband is a police officer, and he carries one of these in his car all the time to help someone get out of a car if they are not able to do so themselves. The company makes one that you can put on your keychain so you ALWAYS know where it is in your car. At the website I listed below, I was able to find a gift set with both tools for less than $20. That way no matter what - you have a way to get the window out of your way, cut the seatbelt if it's jammed - and you can swim away. Hopefully you'll never need the advice! Good luck! |

If you want to make sure you can get out of this situation, carry around a heavy blunt object that you can use to break the window. |
