SCENARIO: Mary Jean wants to purchase a van. She is really up on the safety more than the miles per gallon number. Though, she doesn't get why the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country 2005 have a poor crash test rating, she watched a crash test on that vehicle and didn't know why it had a poor rating. The van and the dummy looked fine.
She knows what the symbols mean on the IIHS:
P = Poor
M = Marginal
A = Average
G = Good
How do they judge crash test ratings on vehicles like when Mary Jean saw a video of the Chevrolet Astro and Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country 2005 had a poor rating. I get that the Chevy Astro got a poor rating, but how can the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country 2005 have a poor rating if the vehicle and the dummy look okay?

In your question, it said LOOKS like the dummy and the van is okay. When they do a crash test, they put those crash test stickers/logos on the car and on the crash test dummy. When they do the crash test for the vehicle, they put the camera on the outside to see how the structure and how much damage it got on the vehicle. Since you can't see the whole dummy on the outside of the car, they put two cameras inside the car. One on the door by the front passenger's seat so they can see the movement of the head, neck, torso, leg, foot, etc. One on the back passenger's seat so they can see what movements the back dummy does. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention they also have a camera on the crash test wall so they can see the front car's damage and structure. Then they review the video and analyze their data on the structure and dummy. Finally, they average the poors, marginals, averages, and goods like averaging numbers. Then they have the final ratings and then they report it to the car making company to make sure the car dealerships get the crash test ratings. |
