How do you keep tailgaiters from following too close?

I wouldn't condone either one of your methods as they are liable to get YOU stopped by the police - not the tailgater.

There isn't much you can do with someone who drives too close except turn off and let them go by if it bothers you.

Yes. Swerving may cause someone to think you have been in the vodka and get your tag number called into the police then you will be the one who is pulled over, not the tailgater.

If you are sure they are less than 4 seconds behind you, I would change lanes and let them go by. If you are on a 2 lane road where you can not change lanes slow down and force them to pass you. You may catch a middle finger but that is OK too.

There are way to many crazy people who carry guns in their cars to make someone angry with you over something so petty as someone thinking you are driving to slow for them.

legally your spose to either pull over and let them pass or slow down and make them pass, tapping your brakes is very illegal in most states, be safe and let them by, or turn your turn signal on and leave it like that, works for old people

Road rage is no good. If I think they just are not paying attention, I will tap my breaks twice or 3 times. If they don't get the message to keep more distance, then I slow down gradually in a spot they can pass & hope they do so. I do not slow down just to irritate them, but when the road is clear for them to pass. If I am going the speed limit, 55 mpr & they are on my tail, usually going 50 does it. I have gone 45 thought for them to get the point. Too often people are on a cell phone & not paying any attention to their driving. Getting nervous won't help the situation. Don't stop or pull off the road. That will put yourself in a more dangerous situation. Just remain calm as possible & maintain a constant pace.

Aim a shotgun at their windsheild...they'll get the idea. Seriously though, I usually slow way down till they get annoyed and either back off or pass me. If they start waving middle fingers, I wave em back and wait for a good fight. Most are too cowardly hiding behind their wheels to actually get out and do something about the finger, so they run off scared. They need to stop bulling people with there tailgating methods, they'll run into the wrong dude.

Once your above 45mph just hold your windshield washers on for a minute it will go over your car and get all over theirs it works great.they almost always back off and the washer fluid is cheap.

tap on your breaks couple of times. Most tailgaters don't even realize they are doing it. SO don't get mad. ALso lot of people can't see far that's one other reason they drive too close to you.

a read of a guy who had one of those back windows where washing fluid comes out so he turn it backwards and wheneve someone tailgated him he squirted them with it...also if you have a camera phone, take a picture of them tailgating then one of their license plate and call the police in most states road rage is illegal and punishable by 3 yrs in prison and high fines. the other thing is to mount an old video camera in your back window and place a notice below it 'smile you're on camera' or something most road ragers don't want their pic took

I once had a stick shift (84' Cavalier) that would allow me to put my backup lights on without actually putting the car in reverse. So I would alternate backup lights & break lights and they surely got the message.

Put a momentary switch to your back up lights and alternate your break lights and backup lights.

ride side by side with a semi while being tail gated or slam on brakes

tap on your breaks and just watch in your rear-view mirror and if that doesn't work go really slow it pisses them off!

i either drive so slow it pisses them off and they go around me in a huff, or i tap the brakes enough to activate the brake lights over and over but not enough to actually make the car stop much. that makes them scared you will really brake and they usually give some space. test it first to see how sensitive the brakes are. lol

tap your brakes lightly - you don't want them slamming into you from behind for real.

Ride your brakes a little, but not too long. Repeat until he passes you, which he probably will. That's okay; you'll have avoided an accident, and he'll have his car wreck from speeding somewhere else.

pull on your breaks and if they hit you.. its there fault and will have to pay for the bill.. cause your suppose to have enough space so when u do put on your breaks.. you can have enough time to stop.
