How do you signal to bystanders that you cannot stop the vehicle?

Use the horn, hazard lights.

I think a lot of people over-use the horn, so that it is not clear to most people that there is a problem when they hear a horn. On my car there is a switch to start all the lights around the car flashing, then after that use the horn.

Actually if the brakes fail, we can down shift, or in worst case turn off the ignition.

This can damage the car, so it needs to go immediately after to get serviced.

Normally I only use the nand brake after I have stopped, like when I am parked on a steep slope, but on occasion when I had to brake extremely hard, I supplemented that braking with the hand brake. Then afterwards took the car to the service dealer & asked them to check that I had not damaged the brakes in the process.

It is difficult for me to imagine a situation where I cannot stop my car, unless it has been sabotaged.

I can imagine a person having a car that needs to go in for one kind of repairs, and has been postponing it, and now something else go wrong.

There's also risk of driver panic where they forget all the things you are supposed to be able to do in a crisis.

The most importantâ€”and perhaps hardestâ€”thing to do is to stay calm. Get in the right lane and onto the shoulder or exit. If changing lanes, use the blinker and move slowly. After the car is in the right lane, turn on hazards. Allow the car to slow down by taking your foot off the gas and shifting the car into a lower gear. After the car is out of traffic, put the car in neutral and use the emergency brake to stop. If the emergency brake is also broken, try to rub the tires on the curb to stop the car. Get the car out of traffic before stopping to avoid an accident with oncoming traffic.
When the car is off the road and the passengers are safe, use flares or other warning signals to keep drivers away from the vehicle. Raise the hood of the car and tie something white to the antenna or hang it out the window so officials know help is needed. Move a safe distance from traffic and the parked vehicle and look for help.
