On a lot of cars now adays the parking brake is in the middle, between the front seats, there is the lever, you pull it up until you hear 7 clicks or until you cant pull it up anymore, never drive with it engaged or it will remanently damage your ars braking system. To release it, press the button on the front of the handle and push it down. There are also pedal parking brakes, it should be a small pedal all the way to the left, you press it all they way down until it clicks, and to release it, step on it again, until it comes back to its normal position. |

Yes. Yes you are.
Depending on the type of car, there should be a pedal to the extreme left. Press it down, and the parking brake is engaged. Above it, there should be a switch you can pull with your left hand that says "Parking Brake Release."
However...perhaps you shouldn't be driving. You sound like a danger to the community. |

It is usually a foot pedal on the left side on the floor. A lever releases it also on the left side but under the dash. Use it when you exit the vehicle. |

you use it when you park by pressing the release button in the end and lifting it up. You release it by pressing the button again and pushing it down. (In some cases there are no buttons just up and down.) You want to use the park brake or "Hand Brake" when you park. It will make your car more secure in the sense that your car will stay in the position and not slip or move in any way easily. |

Every vehicle has a parking brake. It's part of your safety equipment. Most people don't use it. People who drive manual shift vehicles tend to use it more than those who have automatic shift vehicles.
It works similar to a "hand lever brake" on a bicycle. The parking brake lever (on the floor or on the consol or somewhere on the dashboard) is pushed or pulled and this manually pulls a cable which applies the rear brakes, just like on a bicycle brake. In older cars, it may be seized up, broken or corroded. It must be working to pass a safety check too. Make sure you know if it works. Also, like a bicycle cable it can stretch with use and may need tightening.
If your "service" brake (foot brake) fails due to a cut brake line or other problem, you have this "emergency" brake to assist you in stopping your vehicle. You would apply it by holding the button in, or the release lever up and feathering the "emergency brake" until you stop. This will take a lot longer to stop your vehicle and you should try this exercise so you understand how it works as an "emergency brake" BEFORE you ever have to use it in that way.
As a "parking brake", it is meant to be applied by pulling up without using the button or pushing down with your foot, in order to lock it on. You would apply your "parking brake" after stopping, then place your transmission in the Neutral position and remove your foot from the brake to allow the vehicle to come to it's natural resting position, and then shift to Park. By parking your car in this way, you take any unnecessary pressure off the "park" gear. This is especially important on hills because it will protect your transmission too.
I can vouch for this method because I have just sold my 2001 Honda Civic after teaching driver education in it for 5 years, and that would be about 5 students a day, 5 days a week (450,000 km on the car), and had absolutely NO problems with my transmission.
You can also use this "parking brake" as a "hand brake" when starting on a hill.
In an automatic transmission vehicle, you would apply your "hand brake" and hold in the button, or hold up the lever, to prevent your car from rolling back, then release your right foot from the brake and apply gentle steady pressure to the accelerator.
When you feel your vehicle tugging forward, gently release your "hand brake" and continue moving forward. You will have to practice this several times to become comfortable with doing it, but it works!
I hope this explains things for you.
Most drivers have no idea how this "parking/emergency/hand" brake works, or what it's use is, so don't feel dumb.
If you need more mechanical information you could ask at your local garage too. |
