Courage

You walk against the flow of traffic so you are more likely to see the cars coming at you rather than with the flow of traffic (where a car might hit you from behind) if on a freeway.

The rest of the time you walk on the sidewalk or as close to the edge of the road as possible. You cross at cross-walks when the light is in YOUR favor (ie, either with the green walk guy or when the light at the intersection is green.) If there is no light, you make sure that the cars see you, have stopped, before you start to walk.

Hold your child's hand or make sure they stay CLOSE to you when you cross the street. Under 6 is too young to assume they'll walk by you, hold their hand or require them to hang onto your coat-tails or stroller or something.

You just... respect the road.
