How does an airbag counteract the force of an accident?

it's a research question that I have to answer, and I'm having trouble answering it. So please help :) Thanks!

It doesn't. The force of an accident is not diminished in any way by any of the restraints, crumple zones or any other passive or active safety devices.

What they CAN do is dissapate and redirect the forces acting on the passengers within the vehicle.

If the vehicle hits a wall at forty miles per hour, the body is thrown forward at 40 miles per hour. It is simple physics. The seatbelts keep the body from being thrown out of the car. The airbag merely serves as a cushion so that the head still hits the bag at 40 mph, but hitting the air filled bag is a LOT less dangerous than hitting the hard steering wheel or steering column, or even the padded dashboard.

It has to do with the instantaneous impact of a solid body and slowing the forward motion of another body down to spread the forces involved over a longer period of time.
Compare it to running into a brick wall vs. running into a mattress placed against the same wall.

The forces are the same with or without the airbag. What the airbag does is to spread the forces over a larger area and then because they provide a cushion space they allow the deceleration forces to be lower.
