Wintery roads are slick, meaning there is reduced friction (and thus reduced traction) between the road surface and your tires or shoe soles. Gravel increases friction, thereby increasing traction. Salt performs an entirely different purpose; when ice melts, the water mixes with the salt, becoming salt water. Since salt water has a lower freezing point than fresh water, salt water is less likely to become ice again, so you end up with a wet road instead of an icy one. |

When driving on a gravel road that is snow covered you should have better traction. But if you are putting gravel down on a regular road for traction, watch out. If the wheels spin, you'll send pieces of gravel fling at a high rate of speed. You will do some damage not only to your car, but any one who just happens to be walking in the wrong place could get seriously hurt. |

Generally yes but it will depend on the temp. If the gravel is warm or the temp is high enough for the gravel to enter the snowy road surface, then it is very effective. If there is a lot of snow or the temp is really cold, it is less effective. |

As gravel provides an excellent surface for most streets and driveways traction applications, there are some situations in which gravel may not be particularly appropriate.
For example, a street or driveway with a steep grade may not be suitable for gravel.
Run off water may wash the gravel and form ruts as it travels down hill.
The result will be ruts which are cut to the bare ground and form slick areas which may provide for rough or no travel. |
