How fast should i drive in the snow?
Find answers to your legal question.

How fast should i drive in the snow?

Im taking my drivers test in a few days, and its been snowing recently. The weather is clear for the day of my test so they wont cancel it, but i want to know how much i should reduce my speed if the roads are still a little messy. The speed limit is 25 in the whole area my test will be in. How fast should I go?

The main thing to remember when driving in snow is that every maneuver takes longer to do. Accelerating, slowing, turning, everything you do you have to give yourself a lot of extra time to do. If you try doing anything fast, you will immediately lose control.

Basically you have to use a whole different mindset when driving in snow.

hello
to the point that you can still make emergency maneuvers. so that you don't slide through intersections. so that you can turn without skidding or spinning out. that's how much you should slow down.

I took my test during an actual blizzard. Just hold your speed a few mph lower, start braking a little earlier (they'll notice that), and bear in mind that the testers will usually be a little easier on you when conditions are worse. Mine even had me park in a cop-car spot because the lot was all clogged up with snow and cars...

You should go around 20 mph but keep a larger distance from the car ahead with snow your car will have a hard time braking, also accelerate slowly dont floor it might spin out.

Never drive faster than your Guardian Angel can fly.

When driving on snow and ice, it's hard to say for a fact just how fast you can drive. Too many variables involved. Rule of thumb- drive at a speed where you still have 100% control of your vehicle whether you are moving or trying to stop. If you are spinning your tires, sliding around turns or skidding past where you are trying to stop at, then you are going too fast. On the flip side if you keep getting hung up trying to go up a grade, then you may be going too slow & not keeping a constant & fast enough speed to pull the grade without losing traction.

It's going to be trial & error when you are a new driver or a driver that isn't used to driving in snow & ice.

Try to get a day where you can go to an empty snow covered parking lot that has no obstacles in it (lamp posts, metal barrier or safety poles, speed bumps, etc) and just drive around- make a few turns faster than you should & let the car fish tail on you, hit the gas too hard from a dead stop, slam on your brakes and try to stop at the point of the lot where you want to stop at. This will let you feel what a vehicle does under those conditions & it will allow you to get used to using the correct methods to regain control without the risk of having an accident or damaging your car in the process.

Make sure you have permission to use that lot to keep from having to answer a lot of questions by the police or private security that patrols the property.

Avoid the brake peddle if you can and stay in LOW gear, not D. If you're driving a manual keep it in either 1st or maybe 2nd, but use the engine to break whenever you can. If you have to use brakes, and you will, do it early and just barely tap it and put slight pressure as you stop.
If you begin to slide with your foot on the brake get your foot OFF of it right away then tap it to slow down and let the engine do the braking from a lower gear if at all possible.
All in all keep it around 15 or less.
Practice first and get used to the feel of it otherwise you might draw some real hard nose inspector..Then you'll have to do it all over again at a later date..

bungee
just go the same speed or a little slower than the traffic around you<
