How fast should you be going when merging on the on-ramp?

There is a lane turning to merge with another lane that is going straight on the on-ramp, then after that merge, have to merge again on the freeway.

How fast should one be going when first entering the on-ramp for the first merge?

Slightly faster than the moving traffic because it's easier to slow down than speed up

Fast enough to accelerate onto the highway IF there is space to merge, but slow enough to stop if there ISN'T. That's why it's called YIELDING.

Mach III. It's always safer to drive faster when merging with traffic. People that pull into the flow of traffic doing 50 mph are dangerous. They cause traffic to lock up behind them pissing people off. Then you get the angry people behind you trying to go around you in the left lane only thing is umptine other cars are already backed up because of your slow merge. By the time you get up to speed you've just made a lot of people pissed. Sooner or later you're going to run into a situation with the wrong person at the wrong time and either have an accident or get run off the road on purpose. As long as you're paying enough attention to ask this question you have half a chance to become a safer driver!
