How fast/slow should I be going?

At a place where I live, the speed limit decreases from 50-30 by increments of 5 mph.
So say I was going 50 and I catch a glimpse of the 45mph sign, do I slow down immediately? Or do I wait until I get closer to the sign so that I am going 45mph when I pass it?
Just wondering!

Once you pass the sign, the speed limit begins. So you dont have to slow down once you see the sign, but once you pass it you better be going 45. |

I think there's a grace period of 100 yards after you pass a speed limit reduction sign. So, a cop can't ticket you until you're still speeding more than 100 yards past the sign. Of course this may not be true in all areas, but I think most cops will take that the sign limit just gone down into consideration before issuing a ticket. |

The second your front bumper passes the 45mph sign, you need to be traveling at the posted speed of 45mph.
Anything over will give any cop the right to give you a speeding ticket.

If the speed limit is 50, but you know it goes from 50 to 45 to 35, then slow down a little bit the closer you get to these signs. Eventually you will end up at 35 without hitting the breaks last minute. |

The law says that when you pass a Speed Limit sign you are suppose to be going that speed. So if the speed sign says reduced speed ahead and you see a sign saying Speed Limit 45mph you can start to slow down before that but you are not required until you pass the sign. So each time you pass a Speed Limit sign you need to go the posted speed. This does not mean you have to break unless it is necessary as you can let off the gas a little an slow down that way.
When you pass a sign that says Speed Limit 35mph and are doing 40-45mph and an officer sees you or gets you on radar you most like will get a ticket and have almost no recourse for an appeal though you can try. The reason is that you knew the Speed Limit was reduced but you failed to adhere to that limit.
Best thing to do when you know the posted speed is reduced is began to slow down so that when you pass that sign you are going the posted Speed and will reduce the chances of getting a ticket. Because speeding tickets are costly I know so I have had three ranging in price from $75.00, $95.00, & $107.00, in the last 10 years. So don't speed unless you like giving your money to the city or state. |
