The only time any vehicle can be called 'safe' is when the engine is off and the vehicle is unoccupied - and that's about 95 pct of the time. The so-called safety devices in motor vehicles are there to reduce the likelihood of death or minimize injuries. This only applies to very specific conditions that affect the impact. See item 9 of FAQs at safercar.gov on this site:

http://www.safercar.gov/portal/site/safercar/menuitem.13dd5c887c7e1358fefe0a2f35a67789/?vgnextoid=b2c72d0e0c2c8110VgnVCM1000002fd17898RCRD

The only true way to keep vehicles from running into things is for the drivers to be more aware of the influences that we all drive under. And you thought that there was only one that could get us into trouble?

Stronger, quicker brakes systems with shorter stopping distances.
Traction and stability systems help keep the vehicle going in the intended direction.
Safety restraint systems help reduce injuries or death in collisions.
Advanced warning systems keep you from hitting something you may not see.
Advanced rollover systems help keep all 4 wheels on the road.

I can go on and on...

But you should know that technology doesn't "ensure" safety in cars.
