How important is the police report for auto ins co in determining fault?

When insurance co determine fault, will they take into consideration the police report?
At the scene of the accident the police came and the other driver admitted to realizing they ran a red. But now is telling a completely different story to their and my insurance co. Also there was a witness who stated it was her fault and is now changing his story. My version has not changed. I was going through an intersection and the other driver hit me when she ran a red and also hit a car waiting for the red light heading the opposite direction as her. That other car is the witness who is now changing his story. How important will the statement made by both of these people at the scene of the accident to the police officer be in determining fault?
Additional Details
I did state previously that STATEMENTS were made to the officer. The police report will have not only his opinion but also what was stated in my case. So, I meant, in my case how important is it?

MODERATELY important. the police report is only 1 person's opinion. the cop is not God, he is just a man making a determination of what happened. The report has its place in claims adjusting, but its only an opinion as is given its weight as such.

fyi: independent witnesses are the strongest evidence. an independent witness is gold.

VERY important. The insurance company will likely take side with the police, but as their insurance will be the ones paying, they will probably try and withhold the money from you. your insurance company should be the ones to get involved and fight for you if this occurs.

Tough one.

The police report is very important as the officer is impartial and was actually able to say what they observed when they came to the scene of the accident. They could see how the cars were impacted and were able to get evidence from people at the scene.

However, what puzzles me is the other driver who was hit changing their story. I could expect the person who made the mistake to change their story, but if the other driver hit changes theirs, then that is very strange. You don't mention what they changed it to.

One of the problems is that right after the accident, people could be in shock which may affect what they say. It would depend on how much the other person who was hit has changed their story and whether it now contradicts what happened and blames you for the accident.

I would find out what everyone is saying and keep in touch with your insurance company. If they think someone else was responsible for the accident then they will push it is the insurance company of the person at fault who has to pay out so they will be on your side.

Very important and if they said one thing then they cannot change it and I have never seen it done......
